Indian refiners are planning to resume purchases of Iranian crude after the United States issued a 30-day sanctions waiver, traders said. The temporary relief allows oil loaded before March 20 to be discharged by April 19, amid supply disruptions linked to the US-Israel conflict with Iran. Refiners are awaiting government guidance and clarity on payment mechanisms.

With limited domestic stockpiles and reduced West Asia flows, Indian firms are exploring options alongside other Asian buyers. However, logistical and compliance challenges, including payment routes and reliance on ageing vessels, may complicate transactions despite an estimated 130–170 million barrels currently at sea.

Industry bodies say several units have cut operations, with some mills shutting one to two days a week. To manage the crisis, community kitchens are feeding over 5000 workers daily, while authorities have deployed officials across 75 LPG agencies to curb black marketing and stabilise supply.
