A 25-year-old man died after his throat was slit by a stray strand of banned Chinese manjha while riding his motorbike on Sitapur highway in Uttar Pradesh, police said on Thursday, reported the PTI.

The victim, Ravi Kumar Sharma, was travelling with his wife as a pillion passenger to his in-laws’ house in Mohammadi for Bhai Dooj when the incident occurred.

Superintendent of Police Rajesh Dwivedi told PTI that Sharma was immediately taken to the Government Medical College, where doctors declared him dead.

Sharma, a resident of Nagla Jaju village under Katra police station limits, became the latest victim of the hazardous glass-coated string despite a ban on its sale and use.

According to police, this is not the first such incident in the district. Earlier in January, a police constable lost his life after his throat was deeply cut by Chinese manjha near Azizganj. Following that tragedy, police launched a crackdown on the sale of the banned kite string, as per the PTI.

In July, authorities seized over 300 bundles of Chinese manjha and arrested several traders. The move reportedly caused divisions within the traders’ association.

Meanwhile, in an another incident in Maharashtra, as many as seven people were injured on Thursday morning in a collision between a BEST bus and a tempo on Airoli Bridge, officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said.

According to the BMC, the incident was first reported at 10:05 am, with updates received at 12:30 pm from the Assistant Medical Officer (AMO) of Veer Savarkar Hospital, Mulund.

All seven injured were taken to the hospital for treatment. Two were admitted to the Male Surgical Ward and are reported to be in stable condition, while five others were treated on an outpatient basis.

BEST officials later clarified that the accident occurred around 6:45 am near the Bhandup Pumping Signal on Vasantrao Naik Marg. The bus, operating on route number 492/31 from Bhoomi Acres in Thane to Majas Depot, was struck by an oncoming tempo (MH-03-CV-8123) traveling from Bhandup towards Vashi.

Two passengers from the bus and five occupants of the tempo sustained injuries. One passenger from the bus and one from the tempo were admitted to Veer Savarkar Hospital, while the remaining five received first aid and were later discharged, the BEST officials said.
