My NEWS readers welcome the Supreme Court's decision to bar Sanjay Dutt from contesting the electionsu00a0

The landmark judgement of the Supreme Court to bar Sanjay Dutt, who was convicted under the provisions of the Arms Act, from contesting the upcoming general elections is a welcome one. This decision will go a long way in strengthening democracy in the country.

The judgement not only befits criminal jurisprudence but also sets a good precedent. It will help eliminate the criminalisation of politics and will hopefully herald a new era of clean politics. Hats off to the Indian judiciary, which is truly the pillar of the world's largestu00a0 democracy.

The Supreme Court has set the right precedent by not allowing actor Sanjay Dutt, who was convicted for a serious crime for a six-year term, from contesting the Lok Sabha elections. Till now, courts have been lenient in allowing him bail and permitting him to travel all over the world and continuing his multi-million- rupee film career. Many others convicted of similar crimes are not so fortunate. They are cooling their heel in jails, waiting for a final verdict.

The present verdict will set a precedent and keep many undeserving candidates aspiring to enter politics away from the elections. In the past, for some unknown reasons, convicts serving their sentences have been allowed to stand for elections. And this was mainly because of their enormous money and muscle power.

However, Dutt's judgement is a landmark one. With the law having set a precedent, people will have a better choice of candidates henceforth. Should we now expect all the political parties to take the hint and stop thrusting criminals upon the hapless public?

The Supreme Court was right in saying that allowing Sanjay Dutt to contest the Lok Sabha elections would set a wrong precedent. By barring Dutt from contesting the polls, the SC has sent out a clear signal to all aspiring politicians with criminal records. This judgement speaks volumes about our judicial system. Dutt, with all his political clout, was unable to influence the decision of the SC.

Now is the time to usher change and oust all tainted ministers. This will help in strengthening our democracy as only great leadership can help India become a super power.
