The police have arrested two men for allegedly performing black magic rituals at a crematorium in Thane district recently.
According to reports, the matter came to light when a police patil, who is responsible for maintaining order within villages, assisting the police in investigations, and liaising between the administration and villagers, discovered two photographs of unidentified women pasted onto a lemon wrapped in black cloth. This was placed at the crematorium grounds in Pimplasgaon village in Bhiwandi.
Police said two men had allegedly indulged in black magic at the site between June 29 and July 4. The men were arrested on Saturday and booked under the Maharashtra Prevention and Eradication of Human Sacrifice and other Inhuman, Evil and Aghori Practices and Black Magic Act.
This is extremely necessary, and the punishment should send out a message that it is criminal to indulge, advocate or endorse mumbo jumbo.
We have had instances where black magic allegations have been used to target women especially. Branded as witches, bad omens, bringers of disaster and death, these targets have to endure horrific humiliation, or even death. There have also been instances where children have been ‘sacrificed’ to appease something, as part of a ritual.
Superstition can be extremely dangerous and so it is important that practising black magic be stopped at once. It is vital that we put science above all. In rural belts, superstitious ideas need to be rooted out at the very beginning, where children are told that these have absolutely no basis and are used as tools to deceive and intimidate.
The fact that the rituals were done at a crematorium was obviously to add a sinister and macabre edge to this ritual. Stamp this out with the severity it deserves and work on changing mindsets.
