Reports are stating that the altercation was sparked after this patient asked the doctor to speak to him respectfully

Just when one thought they had heard and, in some cases, seen it all, a medical-related shocker has arrived towards the end of the year. A doctor at a medical facility in Himachal Pradesh’s Shimla has been accused of physically assaulting a patient. Videos are going viral, with some disclaimers warning about distressing content. Videos show a patient lying on a bed, and suddenly, a man in a white coat, presumably the doctor, unleashes a series of punches on his face. The patient is kicking the doctor, with another person who also seems to be a doctor seeking to restrain his legs. This would have been unbelievable if not caught on camera and made into a video. Reports said that an attendant had filmed this.
Reports are stating that the altercation was sparked after this patient asked the doctor to speak to him respectfully. A few other reports stated that the doctor was provoked. Whatever the truth, this is absolutely appalling. The doctor has been suspended, and a committee has been formed to investigate the matter.
Even if the doctor was provoked to hit a patient actually rain blows on him, it is abysmal. It hits a new low in patient-doctor relations, one that is already frayed with so many reports coming in about aggression by relatives inside hospitals and doctors being targeted. This edit space has highlighted how doctors must be protected, and hospitals must ensure that their staff is protected.
Here, though, it is the patient under attack. It is time for medical facilities to look at an expert, liaising board/committee between doctors and patients or patients’ relatives. One must also see that this doctor answers to the committee, and if he can be re-employed or employed elsewhere, only after a very thorough questioning by the committee.
Meanwhile, one must ask for patience and peace from supporters of the patient while the correct course of action is decided. We should go into the New Year with this resolved and hopefully a chapter of smooth functioning between medical staff and patients/relatives.
