Elevated decks being built at suburban stations, such as Khar, Kandivli, and several others, can now house major food brand stalls, as the Railways recently cleared a policy allowing the setting up of small stalls of popular brands at railway stations.
The move aims at enhancing the experience of passengers, with Indian Railways approving a new category of station stalls called ‘Premium Brand Catering Outlets’. This adds a fourth category to the Catering Policy 2017. Earlier, stalls were grouped into: tea/biscuit/snack stalls, milk booths and juice and fresh fruit counters. The newly added Premium Brand Catering Outlet category is specifically meant for top-tier branded chains.
While this is one more option for commuters, we can safely say that these outlets will add a new gastronomic dimension for commuters. Transformation and upgradation are inevitable and welcome. Having said that, we want to see similar upgrades in cleanliness on our platforms. Premium food chains should equate to premium cleanliness, too; a sufficient number of bins to dispose of leftovers and food containers are a must.
These must be emptied regularly, and attention paid to the surrounding areas around these bins, being spotless too. We want to see optimum standards within these outlets too, so that it is not just taste or big names that we see on our stations, but absolutely clean cooking, serving, and surroundings.
Commuters, too, are stakeholders here, and food chains and outlets should surely not equate to dirtying platforms or leaving food and drink trails in public places. A facelift, a new plan, and the advent of famous names must go along with cleanliness, neatness and responsible eating at these public spaces. Both must move in unison to ensure health along with hi-fi eating choices.
