An iconic ice cream shop, it seems almost sacrilegious to call it that, the K Rustom & Co. at Churchgate recently lost a case in the Court of Small Causes against landlords Cricket Club of India (CCI). The shop is now in terrible trouble, admitted a spokesperson in a front-page report in this paper.

A wary club recognising the sentimental place the ice cream shop has in Mumbaikars’ hearts, has claimed that it needs the space for expansion plans and the law will take its course. A burgeoning member base has meant the club needs more space, they claimed.
We do hope, like most Mumbaikars, that the ice cream shop and the club come to some solution outside of the legal route and ensure that the ice cream survives.

One recognises that one cannot cling on to nostalgia and that change is the only constant. Yet, the value of these institutions which supersede what they sell, is their history, how tightly they have been weaved into a tapestry that is uniquely Mumbai.

That is the reason we hope the cricket club, historical itself, and its ice cream tenant hammer out some sort of compromise so that the store can stay on. For this, both parties will need to bend a bit till a mutually acceptable way is found. Both will need to be flexible and operate on respect and understanding if there is a will.

These landmarks are of immense value, intangible though it may be, to a city. May the very few that we have left survive and thrive.
