Ahead of the Maharashtra local body elections, a group of senior citizens participated in a large-scale voter awareness campaign organised in connection with the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation. Officials said that the drive was aimed at encouraging maximum voter participation.
The initiative was conducted by the municipal corporation’s SVEEP (Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation) team. A large number of senior citizens, including elderly women, took part enthusiastically in the drive.
The rally featured public announcements through loudspeakers, voter awareness slogans and songs, which helped spread the message of electoral participation among residents along the route.
It is important that senior citizens are informed, aware and go out to vote. We do witness in certain homes or groups, an obliteration of the senior citizen’s agency, they are ignored, their voice silenced in any and every decision. This, then, may extend to outside the home, too.
Make every effort to see that seniors are allowed and have access to their right to franchise.
The silver-haired set has seen many more elections than the younger generation. Their experience and years of wisdom make them a highly important and necessary voice in our system.
It is heartening to note that some of the seniors participated in the pre-poll rallies with gusto. Many seniors are not extremely adept digitally or on social media.
These on-ground initiatives are a good disseminator of information for them. Let us make them an extremely significant part of this franchise, as local issues like the city’s infrastructure, especially roads and sidewalks, impact them greatly.
