The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking is operating additional bus services across Mumbai until October 1 in light of the annual Mahalaxmi Yatra and the ongoing Navratri festival. This initiative aims to provide a smooth travel experience to thousands of devotees visiting the Mahalaxmi temple.
A large number of pilgrims usually alight at Byculla or Mahalaxmi railway stations and then rely on BEST buses to reach the temple. To manage the increased demand, BEST not only enhanced the frequency on existing routes passing through Mahalaxmi temple but is also running special buses connecting key suburban and city locations.
This edit space has highlighted how operating extra BEST bus services during the recently concluded Bandra fair was a great idea, considering how crowded Hill Road is, especially during this time.
Devotees would do well to use the special bus services to avoid traffic congestion. With the festive season on, several infrastructure projects entail route diversions; it is wiser to use public transport and work towards de-congesting the city.
BEST buses are convenient, and one hopes their frequency increases throughout this festival season and beyond. It has been the city’s saviour on numerous occasions, so running these point-to-point services means less road rage, fewer cars on the road, and even an effective solution to parking problems.
Let us see the BEST, which now has fewer buses, return to its usual robust self at least on days when more buses are needed for any reason. We may never see BEST buses return in their former strength on our roads, or we dare to dream that they do so one day. Yet, these buses can be our go-to transport in high-density times.
