Two individuals from a recycling company have been arrested in Thane district for allegedly repackaging expired products, including food items, for resale in the market, according to reports.

The Thane city police raided two godowns in the Dahisar area of Shil-Daighar and seized 200 tonnes of expired goods, an official said. The cops acted on a tip-off that a recycling company was engaged in bringing expired products back into the market instead of destroying them. Two raids uncovered a stockpile of nearly 200 tonnes of expired goods, initially dispatched by an e-commerce company for safe destruction, that were being repacked and stored for resale.

The stock included food grains, cereals, flour, sugar, rice, dry fruits, toilet cleaners, sanitary pads, washing powders, and branded soaps. Labels on these products were deliberately torn, and the items were repacked in plastic and gunny bags to be sold in Bhiwandi and surrounding areas, officials reportedly stated.

This is shocking, but we must say this must be the tip of the iceberg when it comes to expired goods. We have to see tough action and surprise raids being carried out to stop such activities, but some shops store expired goods, giving them to consumers in the hope that buyers do not look at the label. If they do, the shopkeeper, at times, feigns ignorance by pretending to be as surprised as the buyer and at times even tries to blame the staff.

At other times, labels are deliberately written over. They are sometimes ‘missing’ so that there is no expiry date. They are conveniently ‘smudged’ many a time, so that the expiry date becomes extraordinarily difficult to read. Those indulging in these practices need to have their licences revoked, as deceit is one thing, but it may also prove deadly to consume expired food and medicine
