A stretch of road in Worli, the Pandurang Budhkar Marg, has got streetlights after 10 long, trying years. This paper has been reporting on this since February this year. We first flagged the situation eight months ago, showing through our report and pictures just how difficult things were for residents. The area which is close to Glaxo and Doordarshan has a massive building with 1800 residents. The street stretch outside that building, which has several shops below, has been in darkness for 10 years.

When we visited the spot, people were negotiating a darkened stretch made narrower with bike parking. Vehicles and pedestrians were literally inches away from each other, with visibility compromised.

Several upscale towers had sprouted in the vicinity, and there were streetlights near those buildings, but not at this site. Several leaders got involved in the issue, writing letters to relevant agencies pressing for street lights. A couple of days ago, electric poles were installed on the road to the excitement of locals, and lights came on four days ago. We reported on the road getting lights, bringing Christmas and New Year cheer to the road.

Yet, 10 years is an inordinately long time, criminally long in fact, to subject residents to living without street lights. The road had to be illuminated long ago. We have new buildings coming up everywhere, but everybody needs to be treated equally in terms of public amenities.

Dark roads are a festering problem and result in accidents, hugely unsafe, especially for women and can become hotspots for crime. We have pointed out through the edits space about how a well-lit city is a safer city. A decade for something as basic as lights should never happen anywhere.
