This is not just about Diwali, though it is unfortunate to note that several accidents and injuries have occurred due to firecrackers. This edit space has always advocated for festive safety, noting that citizens must celebrate responsibly.
We had written about how precautions and empathy for others should be part of celebrations. We had also highlighted safety measures while bursting crackers. Numerous fire incidents, some unrelated to the festival, have highlighted the importance of being ‘fire aware’ as individuals. We must start at the roots, in our home kitchens, which must become fire-compliant. Wear cotton clothes while cooking or near fire. Keep a tube of Burnol handy in the kitchen. Seek medical advice or intervention if even slightly burnt, instead of dismissing any injury as small.
Ensure that firefighting equipment is installed in the housing society premises and it works. Members must at least have a cursory idea of how to use it. Fire drills are important for this. Ensure that people know the basics —never use the elevator in case of fire. Always have clear passages between flats so that in case of any emergency, people have the right of way. These are fundamentals over which we, the people, have control over and so we can adopt these measures ourselves to ensure safety. When exiting, take charge of children and the elderly, ensuring they get to safe ground.
Those in charge of offices must ensure fire compliance throughout the office complex. Do learn about how putting a wet cloth on the nose and mouth, ensuring a calm exit, can help.
Keep emergency numbers stored inside phones. Keep medical information on hand for quick access. While we cannot safeguard every single part of our living, travelling or working environment, we can do what is in our power, making small changes or taking steps towards more security from fires.
Let us at least do what we can.
