Segal, a classics professor at Yale and Harvard, adapted the screenplay for the movie from his own novel. He was a co-writer for the 1968 Beatles movie Yellow Submarine.
Segal had suffered from Parkinson's disease for 25 years and died on Sunday in London from a heart attack, his daughter Francesca Segal was quoted as saying on Tuesday.
The son of a rabbi, Segal was born in 1937 in New York City and is survived by his two daughters and wife Karen James.
