Pleasant Bridgewater, the former Bahamas senator charged with conspiracy to extort $25 million from actor John Travolta after his son Jett died from a seizure on the island, has been bailed for $50,000.

Bridgewater is accused of plotting with an ambulance driver to demand the money in exchange for suppressing a document related to Jett's treatment.

She appeared in court in Nassau on Wednesday, but was not required to enter a plea.

The document, which would have released emergency responders from liability if the family refused an ambulance, did not come into play in 16-year-old Jett Travolta's case, Marvin Dames, the senior assistant police commissioner, said.

It is unclear why Bridgewater and paramedic Tarino Lightbourne allegedly believed the Travoltas would pay to keep the document from being released.

Lightbourne, who was among those who tried to revive Jett after he collapsed at the Travoltas' holiday home on Jan 2, has pleaded not guilty to charges of attempting to extort and conspiracy to extort money from the film star.

Bridgewater, who resigned her Bahamas senate after her arrest last week, is due to return to court on Feb 12.

Travolta and his wife, Kelly Preston, returned home to Florida with the ashes of their son shortly after his death.
