North Korea announced successful cruise missile tests while US President Donald Trump visited South Korea for the APEC summit. The move, seen as a show of strength by Kim Jong Un, added a tense backdrop to Trump’s diplomatic meetings with President Lee Jae Myung

North Korea said on Wednesday that it has conducted successful cruise missile tests, the latest display of its growing military capabilities and one that comes while US President Donald Trump visits South Korea.
Trump has repeatedly expressed a desire to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during his trip but acknowledged difficulties in arranging a meeting with Kim. “I know Kim Jong Un very well. We get along very well,” Trump said at the beginning of his meeting with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung in the South Korean city of Gyeongju. “We really weren’t able to work out timing”. Earlier, Trump downplayed the significance of North Korean missile tests.
Trump arrived in South Korea for the APEC summit — his first visit in eight years and second meeting with Lee. He is the first foreign leader to be welcomed twice as a state guest in Korea. Lee awarded Trump the Grand Order of Mugunghwa — the nation’s highest honour for heads of state — and also presented him with a gilded replica of a gold crown once worn by Korean kings.
