Boeing's Starliner launch with Sunita Williams onboard called off

The first human crewed flight of Boeing's Starliner spacecraft carrying Indian-orgin Sunita Williams was cancelled minutes before it could take off from the Kennedy Space Centre. According to US space agency NASA, the delay which happened at 3 minutes and 50 seconds before liftoff was called by an automated computer system, which takes over the flight sequence in the final minutes of the countdown. "Teams have scrubbed today's launch attempt for BoeingSpace's Starliner Crew Flight Test due to an automatic hold of the ground launch sequencer," NASA said in its broadcast on Saturday. The ground launch sequencer is the computer that tells the rocket to launch. The agency has scheduled a backup launch attempt for Sunday. If the United Launch Alliance (ULA), which operates the Atlas V rocket, decides the issue that plagued Saturday's attempt has been resolved, the launch would take place at 12:03 pm ET ( 9.33 pm Indian Standard Time). NASA has also additional launch opportunities scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday. Addressing a press conference in Cape Canaveral, Mark Nappi, vice president and program manager for the Commercial Crew Program at Boeing said, "When Starliner shifted from ground power to internal power, there was a slight increase in voltage that turned off the cabin fans, which keep the astronauts cool as they sit in their spacesuits in the capsule. They were able to get them turned on again quickly," Nappi said as per CNN. The Boeing official said that "Tomorrow or whenever we try our next our next launch attempt, we'll have that figured out," adding "This is the business that we're in. Everything's got to work perfectly." Although Starliner didn't launch as planned, "we got really close today," said Steve Stich, manager of NASA's Commercial Crew Program, addressing the press conference. Tory Bruno, president and CEO of United Launch Alliance, which built the Atlas 5 rocket Starliner sits atop said,"If the issue can be fixed tonight, Starliner could launch Sunday at 12:03 p.m. ET. If not, the next launch attempts are June 5 and June 6." The innagural test flight of the Starliner will send NASA astronauts Sunita 'Suni' Willams and Barry 'Butch' Wilmore to the International Space Station, where they will be stationed for about a week to test out how the spacecraft operates with humans on board. The ISS presently has seven astronauts and cosmonauts already on board.. The mission, dubbed the Crew Flight Test, will be a stepping stone to get NASA clearance deeming Boeing's spacecraft ready for regular operations. The launch is part of NASA's "commercial crew programme", which selected Boeing and SpaceX to develop spacecraft to carry astronauts to the International Space Station after NASA retired its Space Shuttle Program in the year 2011. Boeing received over USD 4 billion in US federal funds to develop the Starliner, while SpaceX received about USD 2.6 billion. While the Elon Musk-owned SpaceX company's Crew Dragon has performed 12 crewed missions to the ISS since its first launch on May 30, 2020, Boeing's Starliner has been faced with multiple setbacks. Its first flight mission in December 2019, the Starliner with no crew on board was launched into space but ran into problems. Similarly its second attempt in 2021 also without crew also failed before completing a successful uncrewed test flight in May 2022. Starliner was only about two hours from its first crewed launch attempt on May 6 when engineers identified an issue with a valve on the second stage, or upper portion, of the Atlas V rocket. The entire stack, including the rocket and spacecraft, was rolled back from the launchpad for testing and repairs, CNN reported. Then, mission teams reported a small helium leak within the spacecraft service module. The space agency determined the leak did not pose a risk to the flight. CNN explained that While evaluating the helium issue over the past two weeks, engineers also spotted a "design vulnerability" in the propulsion system -essentially identifying a remote scenario in which certain thrusters might fail as the vehicle leaves Earth's orbit, without a backup method of getting home safely. Williams who has traveled to space twice before, once on a NASA space shuttle in 2006 and then on a Russian Soyuz capsule in 2012 in an earlier . She's logged 322 total days in space. Meanwhile, NASA said that astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore exited their spacecraft and were transported back to their quarters at the Kennedy Space Centre's Neil A Armstrong Operations and Checkout Building, remaining in quarantine as they await Starliner's next launch attempt. Pakistani authorities to probe Imran Khan over a controversial X post

The Pakistani authorities are set to probe jailed former prime minister Imran Khan and at least three senior leaders of his party over a controversial tweet accompanied by a video made from his account about the separation of East Pakistan in 1971. Khan's account, managed by his social media team due to his incarceration, on May 26 shared a video with a quote attributed to him on X, stating: "Every Pakistani should study the Hamoodur Rahman Commission Report and get to know who was the true traitor, General Yahya Khan or Sheikh Mujibur Rahman." The Hamoodur Rahman Commission probed the fall of East Pakistan and compiled a report which had not been officially released. The video accompanying the tweet argued that the former military dictator Yahya Khan was responsible for the country's breakup, referring to alleged atrocities committed by the Pakistani military during the civil war. It also included images of the current civilian and military leadership, alleging they stole the party's mandate in the general elections. The post resulted in a heated debate, particularly from government ministers who accused the Pakistan-Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) of trying to fuel a narrative of hatred against the army by comparing Khan to Sheikh Mujib. The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) already issued a notice to Khan over the issue. An FIA team also visited the Adiala Jail on Thursday to interrogate Khan but he refused to meet the team while saying that he would only respond in the presence of his lawyers. Sources said that it also summoned PTI leaders Omar Ayub Khan, Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, and Raoof Hasan for questioning on Tuesday. The main charge is that the video aimed to incite public agitation against the state and its institutions, potentially spreading fear and unrest among the populace This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. Tel Aviv streets flooded as 1,20,000 protesters demand hostage swap

Anti-government sentiments surged through the streets of Tel Aviv as protesters voiced their demands for a hostage swap deal with Hamas and the removal of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, accompanied by calls for early elections, The Times of Israel reported. Organisers claim that Saturday's demonstration marked the largest gathering since October 7, estimating a turnout of 120,000 individuals in Tel Aviv alone, although this figure remains unverified. Similar protests unfolded across various locations nationwide, with Tel Aviv's Begin Street witnessing impassioned speeches, including one from Einav Zangauker, mother of hostage Matan Zangauker. Alongside other hostage families, she cautioned against Netanyahu's potential obstruction of a proposed deal, following revelations from US President Joe Biden regarding an Israeli proposal, as reported by The Times of Israel. "[Biden] spoke because he knows that Netanyahu may torpedo this deal as well," she said. "Biden wanted the public to know what was really on the table." Protests at Democracy Square, the intersection of Begin Road and Kaplan Street, have become a fixture since the inception of the anti-judicial overhaul movement last January. However, they experienced a temporary hiatus after the Hamas terror attack on October 7, which resulted in significant casualties and abductions. In Jerusalem, thousands marched towards the President's Residence, initially planned as an anti-government rally but redirected towards securing a hostage deal following Biden's intervention. Chants reverberated through the city streets, demanding the safe return of hostages and expressing gratitude towards Biden for his efforts to end the conflict. "He who abandons must return [the hostages]," protesters chanted, while many held signs thanking Biden for his statement urging an end to the war. Yellow flags, symbolic of the hostages held by Hamas in Gaza, waved prominently. Despite its original focus on the forthcoming Jerusalem Day holiday, the march assumed new significance amid ongoing negotiations for a potential deal. Although the Jerusalem branch of the Hostages and Missing Families Forum distanced itself from the event, several hostage relatives took charge of the procession. Meanwhile, a joint statement from Qatar, the United States, and Egypt urged Israel and Hamas to embrace the proposed ceasefire and hostage release deal outlined by Biden. "Qatar, the United States and Egypt jointly call on both Hamas and Israel to finalise the agreement embodying the principles outlined by President Biden on May 31, 2024," the statement reads. "These principles brought the demands of all parties together in a deal that serves multiple interests and will bring immediate relief to both the long-suffering people of Gaza as well as the long-suffering hostages and their families. "This deal offers a roadmap for a permanent ceasefire and ending the crisis," the statement adds, The Times of Israel reported. NGO launches drive for healthcare access to people with intellectual disability

A US-based non-profit on Saturday announced an initiative to enhance healthcare access for individuals with intellectual disabilities, with an aim to benefit 10,000 people in India in the first year. Under Project Hitarth, US-based Voice of Specially Abled People (VOSAP) has entered into a collaboration with Parivaar NCPO (National Confederation of Parents Organizations) to provide financial support to social workers to assist individuals with intellectual disabilities in accessing much-needed therapies, dental work, outpatient department services and get reimbursement up to Rs 1 lakh per year from the government of India's Niramaya scheme, a press statement said. "We are very excited for the opportunities with this new model to expand VOSAP impact that leverages the government of India's existing programmes and strengths of our trusted, reputed partners like Parivaar," said VOSAP's California-based founder Pranav Desai. VOSAP is a leading disability sector NGO, having enabled more than 25,000 persons with disabilities since 2017 by providing assistive devices, surgical interventions and scholarships. The Niramaya scheme offers up to Rs 1 lakh insurance reimbursement for covered medical expenses for individuals with intellectual disabilities. A joint research conducted by VOSAP and Parivaar NCPO revealed significant underutilisation of the scheme due to challenges in online enrollment, understanding benefits and navigating the complicated claim process, the statement said. In 2022-23, according to a government of India report, only 28,323 claims -- out of 1,87,290 (1.87 lakh) enrolled beneficiaries -- with an average of Rs 6,405 per claim were settled. This indicates a very poor enrollment as the number of individuals with intellectual disabilities in India are more than one crore and significantly low reimbursements amounts ie very little impact of the Niramaya programme, the statement said. "The pilot programme aims to benefit 10,000 individuals with intellectual disabilities within its first year, with the goal of scaling to 1,00,000 beneficiaries. By improving access to health care and reducing the financial burden of medical expenses, (Project) Hitarth strives to enhance the quality of life for individuals with intellectual disabilities through essential therapies such as physiotherapy and speech therapy, etc," it said. Parivaar NCPO's Pankaj Maru said, "Parivaar is happy to collaborate with Voice of SAP to make the Niramaya health insurance (schemeI more accessible for millions of PwIDDs through our more than 300 parents and voluntarily member organisations having presence in 31 states." Chad Daybell sentenced to death for killing wife and girlfriend's 2 children

Chad Daybell has been sentenced to death for the murders of his wife and his girlfriend's two youngest children in Idaho. The sentence was handed down Saturday after an Idaho jury unanimously agreed that imposing the death penalty would be a just resolution to the triple-murder case. The sentence marks the end of a grim investigation that began with a search for two missing children in 2019. The next year their bodies were found buried in Daybell's eastern Idaho yard. Both Daybell and his new wife, Lori Vallow Daybell, were charged with multiple counts of murder, conspiracy and grand theft in connection with the deaths of Vallow Daybell's two youngest children, 7-year-old Joshua "JJ" Vallow and 16-year-old Tylee Ryan. They were also charged with conspiracy and murder for the death of Daybell's first wife, Tammy Daybell. During a nearly two-month-long trial, prosecutors said Chad Daybell promoted unusual spiritual beliefs including apocalyptic prophecies and tales of possession by evil spirits in order to justify the killings. Daybell's defence attorney John Prior argued during the trial that there wasn't enough evidence to tie Daybell to the killings, and suggested Vallow Daybell's older brother, Alex Cox, was the culprit. Cox died in late 2019 and was never charged, and Vallow Daybell was convicted last year and sentenced to life in prison without parole. During the sentencing hearing, Prior asked the jurors to judge Daybell on his life before he met Vallow Daybell, describing her as a bomb that blew him off the trajectory of an otherwise wholesome life. But Daybell also declined to offer any mitigating evidence during the sentencing hearing. Mitigating evidence is often used to encourage jurors to have sympathy for a defendant in an effort to show that a life sentence would be more appropriate than capital punishment. Family members of the victims gave emotional statements to the jurors. JJ Vallow's grandmother Kay Woodcock tearfully described how the 7-year-old would show empathy and compassion to others through soft touches and by frequently asking if those around him were OK. She also said Tylee was a doting big sister, and that it warmed her heart to see them together. "I can't express just how much I wish for more time to create memories," Woodcock said, beginning to weep. Idaho law allows for execution by lethal injection or firing squad, though firing squad executions have never been used in the state. At least 19 injured as Russia targets Ukraine’s power grid

Russia pummelled Ukraine’s energy infrastructure with a large-scale drone and missile attack Saturday, injuring at least 19 people, local officials said. The Ukrainian military reported that it had downed 35 out of the 53 missiles launched at targets across the country overnight on June 1, as well as 46 out of 47 attack drones. Injuries were reported by officials across the country, including in Ukraine’s western Lviv region and the central Dnipropetrovsk region. Twelve people, including eight children, were hospitalised after a strike close to two houses where they were sheltering in the Kharkiv region, said Governor Oleh Syniehubov. The strikes were part of a series of sustained attacks by Russia against Ukraine’s power grid, which has been ongoing since March. Damage to Ukraine’s energy infrastructure in recent weeks has forced leaders of the war-ravaged country to institute nationwide rolling blackouts. Without adequate air defenses to counter assaults and allow for repairs, the shortages could still worsen as need spikes in late summer and the bitter-cold winter. Meanwhile, Ukraine and Russia also exchanged prisoners of war on Friday, each sending back 75 POWs in the first such swap in the past three months, officials said. A few hours earlier and at the same location, the two sides also handed over bodies of their fallen soldiers. The Ukrainian POWs, including four civilians, were returned on several buses that drove into the northern Sumy region. As they disembarked, they shouted joyfully and called their families to tell them they were home. Some knelt and kissed the ground while many wrapped themselves in yellow-blue flags and hugged one another, breaking into tears. Simultaneously, NATO foreign ministers were meeting in the Czech capital on Friday to prepare for this summer’s leaders’ summit as the alliance boosts support for Ukraine and countries one-by-one remove restrictions on how Kyiv can use western-supplied weaponry to combat Russia’s invasion. US aircraft to stay on in Yemen

The US Navy aircraft carrier strike group that for months has launched crucial strikes against Houthi rebels in Yemen will remain in the region for at least another month, according to US officials. The joint British-US airstrikes that targeted Yemen’s Houthi rebels on Friday, killed at least 16 people and wounded 42 others, amounting to the highest publicly acknowledged death toll, since the beginning of the attacks. The US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin signed the order last week to extend the four ships’ deployment for a second time, rather than bringing the carrier, the USS Dwight D Eisenhower, and its three warships home. A normal ship deployment lasts about seven months, whereas these ships have been on the waters since last October.  Altogether there are around 6,000 sailors, including a cruiser, two destroyers, the USS Gravely and the USS Mason.. In retaliation, the Houthis held their stand for Israel, and criticised both countries on X. “We confirm this brutal aggression against Yemen as punishment for its position in support of Gaza, in support of Israel to continue its crimes of genocide against the wounded, besieged, and steadfast Gaza Strip,” Houthi spokesman Mohammed Abdulsalam posted on X. Israeli hostages’ families urges govt for a ceasefire

Families of Israeli hostages held by Hamas on Saturday called for all parties to immediately accept the ceasefire proposal detailed by US President Joe Biden, a day before, to end the nearly 8-month-long war and bring their relatives home. The Israeli government, however, said the conditions for a cease-fire still must be met.  “We want to see people coming back from Gaza alive and soon,” Gili Roman, the brother of the Israeli hostage, Yarden Roman said. “This might be the last chance to save lives. Therefore, the current state must be changed and we expect all to adhere to Biden’s call for accepting the deal on the table, immediately. There is no other way to create a better situation for all. Our leadership must not disappoint us. But mostly, all eyes should be on Hamas.” The US President Joe Biden offered Hamas a cease-fire and hostage release deal that would unfold over three phases, with the first one lasting for six weeks with a complete cease-fire, including a withdrawal of Israeli forces from all populated areas of Gaza. It will be followed by the release of all hostages, and the start of a major reconstruction for Gaza.  He urged the Israelis and Hamas to agree to release some 100 remaining hostages, along with the bodies of around 30 more, for an extended cease-fire.  Israel on the other hand, says that the Rafah operation is vital for uprooting the Hamas fighters responsible for the October 7 attack on southern Israel that triggered the war. The 30 year legacy of the ANC ends in elections

Amid ongoing discussions of a coalition government in South Africa, the African National Congress party lost its parliamentary majority in a historic election result on Saturday. This put the country on a new political path for the first time since the end of the apartheid system of white minority rule 30 years ago. With nearly 99 per cent of votes counted, the once-dominant ANC had received just over 40 per cent in the election on Wednesday. The final results are still to be formally declared by the electoral commission. “The way to rescue South Africa is to break the ANC’s majority and we have done that,” said main opposition leader John Steenhuisen. The ANC  will need to look for a coalition partner or partners to remain in the government, reelecting President Cyril Ramaphosa for a second and final term, after the national elections.  The new MK Party of former President Jacob Zuma, who has turned against the ANC he once led, came third with just over 14 per cent of the vote in the first election it has contested. “We are willing to negotiate with the ANC, but not the ANC of Cyril Ramaphosa,” MK Party spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndlela said. Nearly 28 million South Africans were registered to vote this time. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf asks for CJP Isa to step aside from Imran Khan's cases

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) formally requested Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa to recuse himself from bench handling cases relating to the party and its founder, Imran Khan, as reported by ANI via ARY News on Friday. In a statement released following the PTI core committee's meeting, the party emphasised the need for CJP Qazi Faez Isa to step aside from cases involving PTI and Imran Khan, citing concerns over potential bias and lack of impartiality. This demand arises as the Supreme Court prepares to convene on June 3 to address the reserved seats case of the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), with Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa presiding over the bench. Notably, Justice Musarrat Hilali will be absent from the proceedings due to health reasons. The PTI raised objections and claimed that the Chief Justice's involvement in their cases could adversely affect the fairness of the legal proceedings, ARY News reported. During a recent session, a three-member bench, chaired by Justice Mansoor Ali Shah and including Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar and Justice Athar Minallah, suspended a verdict regarding the allocation of reserved seats to other political parties. Justice Mansoor Ali Shah announced that the case has been scheduled for a hearing, adding, "We are suspending the ECP and PHC verdicts." In a separate instance, Imran Khan made an appearance before a Supreme Court bench, led by CJP Isa, concerning amendments to the National Accountability Ordinance 1999, just a day before the PTI's call for recusal. Recently, a local court acquitted former prime minister Imran Khan in two cases registered against him in connection with violent protests that broke out following his arrest on May 9 last year. Khan was also acquitted in two cases related to Azadi March held on May 25, 2022. The founding chairman of PTI is facing a string of cases, including those related to May 9 violence across Pakistan, and is incarcerated in Adiala jail. Six FIRs pertaining to May 9 riots were registered against Khan in different police stations of Islamabad. He has been accused of inciting people to block highways and attacking police, Dawn reported.
