In a bizarre incident, a Class-7 student allegedly attempted suicide while playing an online game named ‘Blue Whale’ in his school premises in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore. Cases of depression and suicide among children are on the rise in India. Renowned psychiatrist and member of Indian Medical Association (IMA) and Indian Psychiatric Society, Dr Harish Shetty feels that an unhealthy lifestyle, disconnection syndrome and emotional stress is compelling children to take this drastic step. According to Dr Shetty, family bonding and good parenting can help deal with depression. Therefore, his message to parents is, “If a child is in trouble, do not avoid him/her; hug the child a little stronger and a little longer, parents can never be replaced”.
