China ship in Mumbai: Indian agencies suspect nuclear link in Pak-bound ship

A Pakistan-bound ship coming from China was stopped at Mumbai by the Indian security agencies on March 02. The Karachi-bound ship was intercepted at Mumbai’s Nhava Sheva port. The vessel was suspected of carrying a consignment that could be used for Pakistan’s nuclear missile programmes. The ship was thoroughly examined by a team of Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The components in the cargo ship were primarily suspected of being used in Pak’s nuclear initiatives, specifically, in manufacturing some critical components for missile development. However, the DRDO is yet to submit its final report on the vessel stopped at the port.

A tragic train accident took place in Jharkhand's Jamtara on 28th February evening as a passenger train ran over 2 passengers at the Kalajharia railway station killing both of them. The Eastern Railway said the victims were walking on the track when they were run over by the Jhajha-Asansol Memu passenger train. Initial reports suggested the persons killed were passengers of Anga Express, running parallel to Memu passenger train, which stopped due to a fire call. The reports claimed that passengers deboarded the train and were run over the Memu train.According to the railway. Officials, the incident occurred at 7 pm and only two persons were killed.

Houthis attack another vessel with 22 Indians onboard, Indian Navy rescues

The Indian Navy on January 27 doused the fire on Marshall Islands-flagged oil tanker Marlin Luanda. The vessel was struck by a Houthi anti-ship missile in the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Navy responded quickly. According to Reuters, the tanker was on fire but no deaths or injuries were reported after the vessel was hit. Indian Navy’s guided missile destroyer INS Visakhapatnam deployed in Gulf of Aden responded to the distress call. The vessel had 22 Indian and 1 Bangladeshi crew onboard. Based on request, the firefighting team comprising 10 Indian Naval personnel embarked the vessel in early hours. Notably, Yemen’s Houthi militants have launched waves of exploding drones and missiles at vessels post Israel’s attack in Gaza.

Merchant ship carrying 9 Indians attacked in Red Sea, Indian Navy acts

Amid the relentless attacks on commercial vessels in the Arabian Sea, Indian Navy swung into action. Indian Navy deployed Guided Missile Destroyer INS Visakhapatnam to combat drone attacks in the Red Sea. INS Visakhapatnam responded to a distress call by Marshall Island flagged MV Genco Picardy following a drone attack. Marshall Island flagged MV Genco Picardy witnessed a deadly attack during the late night of January 17. Assisting, INS Visakhapatnam, undertaking anti-piracy patrol, acknowledged distress call, intercepted vessels at 0030 hrs on Jan 18. Merchant Ship MV Genco Picardy carrying 22 crew members including 9 Indians was rescued safely. Indian Naval EOD specialists from INS Visakhapatnam boarded the vessel in early hours of Jan 18 to inspect the damaged area. EOD specialists, after a thorough inspection, have rendered the area safe for further transit.

Tensions simmer in Red Sea as Yemen-backed Houthis continue to attack commercial ships, affecting international trade. On January 10, Houthi rebels launched 18 drones over southern Red Sea, according to the US military’s Central Command, reported Al Jazeera. The Houthi rebels, who are an Iran-aligned group, started the strikes in retaliation for Israel’s Gaza conflict. Meanwhile, EAM Dr S Jaishankar on Jan 13 highlighted the ongoing challenges in Red Sea region. The External Affairs Minister raised concern over continuous missiles firing, causing damage to ships by Houthi rebels. Also, US carried out fresh strikes against Houthi targets in Yemen amid escalating tensions in Red Sea, CNN reported. These strikes followed a coordinated attack on approximately 30 Houthi locations the day before. Earlier, US Secy Antony Blinken held a telephonic conversation with EAM Jaishankar on January 11. Both leaders discussed recent attacks on merchant ships by Houthis in the Red Sea, informed State Dept spox Matthew Miller.

India-US join forces to retaliate against Houthi attacks in the Red Sea

Tensions shimmer in Red Sea as Yemen-backed Houthis continue to attack commercial ships, affecting int’l trade. Houthi rebels launched 18 drones over the southern Red Sea, according to the US military's Central Command, reported Al Jazeera. The Houthi rebels, who are an Iran-aligned group, started the strikes in retaliation for Israel’s Gaza conflict. Amid affecting int’l trade channel, US Secy of State Antony Blinken held a telephonic conversation with EAM Jaishankar. Both leaders discussed recent attacks on merchant ships by Houthis in the Red Sea, informed State Dept spox Matthew Miller. Blinken emphasised that the Red Sea is a major commercial corridor that welcomed increased cooperation with India. Taking to X, EAM S Jaishankar informed about his insightful discussions with his “friend” Antony Blinken. Hailing India-US ties, he said that both countries will look forward to realising their extensive cooperation agenda for 2024. The US Secretary and EAM also discussed the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, efforts to prevent the escalation.
