“Ready for polls as per legal provisions”: CEC Rajiv Kumar

Union government has constituted a ‘One Nation, One Election’ Committee on September 1. The committee has been formed under the chairmanship of former President Ram Nath Kovind. Committee will explore the possibility which envisages holding of general, states polls simultaneously. CEC Rajiv Kumar said that EC is ready to conduct elections as per legal provisions. Earlier, AIMIM Chief Owaisi rejected the possibility of ‘One Election’ Bill and called it “unconstitutional”. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on several occasions pitched the idea of One Nation, One Election.

Notably in 2020, PM Modi called for a discussion on ‘One Nation, One Election’, calling it a “necessity for India”. If the proposal comes into effect, elections for Lok Sabha and state assemblies across India will be held simultaneously with voting taking place at the same time. The government has decided to call a Special Session of Parliament from September 18-22 where it is speculated that the government could bring a bill for this proposal to take effect.

President Kovind heads 'One Nation, One Election' committee, controversy erupts

The Union government's decision to form a 'One Nation, One Election' Committee, led by former President Ram Nath Kovind, has ignited a fierce debate. While proponents argue for synchronized general and state elections, critics question the appointment of the former President and raise concerns about its constitutionality. Union government has constituted a ‘One Nation, One Election’ Committee on September 01. The committee has been formed under the chairmanship of former President Ram Nath Kovind. Committee will explore the possibility which envisages holding of general, states polls simultaneously. Sources said that the committee will explore the possibility of bringing legislation regarding it. A parliamentary standing committee, Law Commission & Niti Ayog had earlier examined and submitted reports on subject. Speaking on the issue, Samajwadi Party MP Ram Gopal Yadav expressed his dissatisfaction with appointment of former Prez. Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi asked opposition to have a detailed discussion. The Central Govt has decided to call a Special Session of Parliament from September 18-22. It is also speculated that the government could bring a bill for detailed deliberation ‘One Nation, One Election’. Meanwhile, AIMIM Chief Owaisi rejected the possibility of ‘one election’ bill and called it “unconstitutional”. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has several times pitched the idea of One Nation, One Election.
