Bharatiya Janata Party on March 30 released its 8th list of candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The list included 6 candidates from Punjab out of the total 13 Lok Sabha seats of the state. BJP has fielded three turncoats from Congress and AAP who were already holding the parliament seats. Ravneet Singh Bittu, who recently switched from Congress, will contest elections from Ludhiana. For Jalandhar, BJP chose former AAP Lok Sabha MP Sushil Kumar Rinku, who recently joined hands with the saffron party. Former Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh’s wife and former Congress MP Preneet Kaur has been fielded from Patiala. Preneet Kaur joined BJP on March 14 in the presence of National General Secretary Vinod Tawde, leader Tarun Chugh, and Sunil Jhakhar. Former Indian Ambassador to the US, Taranjit Singh Sandhu has been fielded from Amritsar. Famous singer Hans Raj Hans, who is the North West Delhi MP in the outgoing 17th Lok Sabha, has been fielded from Faridkot. Actor Sunny Deol has been dropped from Gurdaspur Lok Sabha constituency and has been replaced by Dinesh Singh “Babbu”.

Denouncing the recently enacted Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) once again, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi went all guns blazing against BJP on March 16 in Hyderabad, Telangana. During a press conference, he alleged that the BJP government wants to make the poor and Muslims stateless. "Our case (challenging CAA) is already in the Supreme Court but at that time govt of India said that the rules are yet not framed. But now as the govt has issued the notifications and has framed the rules for CAA, going to the Supreme Court is a must. If the govt starts giving citizenship based on an unconstitutional law, it can be harmful... This govt is saying that if your religion is Islam, we won't provide you the citizenship, for this we have moved to the Supreme Court. The law was passed in 2019 by the ruling party, but they keep it as it is, when they saw that there would be an announcement for elections in a week, they came up with rules in the night by keeping in mind, the elections. The BJP-led govt wants to make the poor and Muslims stateless.

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on March 12 said that the implementation of CAA is morally and constitutionally wrong and that he is in favour of Congress and INDI Alliance to take the implementation of CAA in the Supreme Court and raise objections against it. On top of that Thiruvananthapuram MP said that Congress will withdraw the provision of CAA if voted to power. “I consider this morally and constitutionally wrong... I'm fully in support of the decision of the Indian Union Muslim League to go to the Supreme Court against this. And I must say, if the INDIA alliance and the Congress party come to power, we will withdraw this provision of the law beyond any shadow of a doubt. It's going to be in our manifesto. BJP has faced a major setback in Haryana. BJP leader and Lok Sabha MP from Hisar, Brijendra Singh joined Congress on March 10 ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections 2024. Brijendra joined the party in the presence of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge. Brijendra took to X and wrote that he resigned because of compelling political reasons. Brijendra Singh also said that there is a possibility of other BJP members joining Congress in Haryana. "I have resigned from the primary membership of BJP, due to compelling political reasons. I extend gratitude to the party, National President Sh. JP Nadda, Prime Minister Sh. Narendra Modi, & Sh Amit Shah for giving me the opportunity to serve as the Member of Parliament for Hisar," he wrote on X.

In a major breakthrough, a senior Govt official revealed that CAA rules are expected to roll out before Lok Sabha Polls. The Citizenship Amendment Act, introduced by Modi govt, aims to confer Indian citizenship to persecuted non-Muslim migrants. Notably, the act will provide citizenship to non-Muslim migrants which included Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, and others. The implementation of the CAA, which has been delayed for over four years, necessitates the formulation of its associated rules. PM Modi-led Central Government is committed to implementing the Citizenship Amendment Act of 2019. On Dec 27, 2023, Home Minister Amit Shah asserted that implementation of CAA can’t be halted as it stands as the law of the land. He had also accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of misleading the public regarding this matter. Between Apr 1, 2021 & Dec 31, a cumulative count of 1,414 individuals from non-Muslim minorities were granted Indian citizenship.
