The whole nation was worried when a portion of the under-construction Silkyara-Barkot tunnel collapsed on November 12. 41 men were trapped inside the tunnel and rescue teams from different government agencies roped in for Uttarkashi tunnel rescue. The herculean task of the safe evacuation of 41 stranded men in the Silkyara tunnel was completed on Nov 28. When machines failed to free the 41 trapped workers in a collapsed Silkyara tunnel in Uttarkashi, officials enlisted the help from miners of a banned practice known as "rat-hole" mining. Rat-hole” mining is the practice which is done by burrowing in tight spaces. Half a dozen of ‘Rat-miners’ started working on November 27, after a second drilling machine broke down with 15 meters left to reach the trapped men. Working for more than 24 hours, they split up into two teams of three, with one person drilling, the second collecting the debris and the third pushing it out of the pipe. Rescuers successfully pulled out the workers after a 17-day ordeal on November 28. "Rat-hole" mining is a dangerous and controversial method used to extract thin seams of coal. The name comes from its resemblance to rats digging pits into the ground. The pits are just big enough for workers, often children, to descend using ropes or ladders to extract coal - often without safety measures and proper ventilation. The practice became illegal in the 1970s, when India nationalized coal mines and gave state-run Coal India a monopoly. But many small mine owners continued to employ short people or children in “rat-hole” mining, and federal authorities didn’t interfere.

IAF's transport aircraft Chinook carrying 41 workers took off from Chinyalisaur Hospital on Nov 29. The workers have been shifted from Chinyalisaur Hospital to AIIMS Rishikesh for further treatment carrying 41 rescued workers, IAF's transport aircraft Chinook reached AIIMS Rishikesh. Workers will be kept under the supervision of expert doctors for a final checkup at AIIMS. 41 stranded workers were rescued from the Silkyara tunnel in Uttarkashi on November 28. After Uttarkashi Tunnel Rescue, workers were shifted to the Community Health Centre in Chinyalisaur for primary treatment. As the trapped workers were safely rescued from the Silkyara tunnel on November 28 evening, their family members and relatives in different parts of the country burst into joy and celebrated the moment like Diwali by bursting crackers. Many relatives, had reached the Uttarkashi Tunnel Rescue site a couple of days after the incident and had been camping there since then, were finally reunited with their loved ones. Family members of Manik Talukdar, one of the workers who was rescued from the Uttarkashi tunnel, celebrated and had a conversation with him through video conferencing. Talking to ANI, Son of Manik Talukdar, said, "We are very happy that they came out of the tunnel... For 17 days we were very worried... Now he (Manik Talukdar) is fine." Family members of Ram Sundar from UP’s Shravasti celebrated their joyous moment by bursting crackers and distributing sweets after his successful rescue from the tunnel. Dhanpati, mother of Ram Sundar, a worker rescued from the Silkyara tunnel in Uttarkashi, said, "We are very happy... We celebrated Diwali yesterday evening, the entire village celebrated Diwali happily yesterday."

Two workers who were trapped in the Silkyara Tunnel talk about their 17-day-long experience trapped in the tunnel following the Uttarkashi Tunnel Rescue. The workers had a sigh of relief after the anxiety-filled initial 24 hours. Vishwajeet Kumar Verma and Subodh Kumar Verma expressed their gratitude to the rescuers and the government as well. Rescued worker Vishwajeet Kumar Verma said, "When the debris fell, we knew that we were stuck. For the first 10-15 hours we faced difficulty. But later, a pipe was put in to provide us with rice, dal and dry fruits. Later a mic was installed and I was able to talk to my family members...I am happy now, will celebrate Diwali now." "The first 24 hours were tough but after that food was provided to us through a pipe. Subodh Kumar Verma, another rescued worker said, “I am absolutely fine and in good health now…”.

In a major victory in the Uttarkashi tunnel rescue operation, the NDRF on Nov 28 rescued all trapped workers from the Silkyara tunnel. The NDRF personnel entered the Silkyara tunnel to rescue the workers on the 17th day of the tunnel collapse. The rescuers entered the tunnel by completing 45-meter pipe drilling to evacuate the workers. The rescued workers were shifted to hospitals for further treatment in 30 ambulances which were on standby at the incident site. The ambulances were fully equipped to provide enhanced medical assistance to patients during transportation. Hours after the safe evacuation of 41 trapped workers from the Silkyara tunnel on November 28, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to the rescued men over the phone. Earlier on Nov 12, Uttarkashi Tunnel Collapse occurred from Silkyara to Barkot due to debris falling in a 60-meter stretch on the Silkyara side.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a telephonic conversation with the 41 men who were evacuated safely from the collapsed portion of the under-construction Silkyara tunnel. The rescue operations continued for 16 days and on November 28, the trapped workers were safely evacuated. Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi had called Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and gave his best wishes for the safe evacuation of 41 workers from the Silkyara tunnel. During this, PM Modi took information from the Chief Minister about the workers. Reacting to the Uttarkashi tunnel rescue, PM Modi praised the bravery and determination of rescuers involved in the Silkyara tunnel operation, saying that they have given new life to the labourers who were trapped in the tunnel for the last 16 days, adding that the mission has set an “example of humanity and teamwork.”

A temporary medical facility has been expanded inside the tunnel as rescue operation completion is expected by Nov 28 evening. After the evacuation, health check-up of the workers will be done inside the tunnel. 8 beds were arranged by the health department and a team of doctors and experts have been deployed. The relatives of the 41 trapped labourers have been asked to be present at the operation site as the ongoing rescue effort raises hopes of an early evacuation. According to the sources, the workers will be taken to Chinyalisaur Hospital after being rescued. While addressing the media on the Uttarkashi Tunnel collapse rescue operation, Lieutenant General (Retd.) and Member of NDMA Syed Ata Hasnain said that the operation is near breakthrough but not yet there. Furthermore, he added that the manual work was carried on and drilled 58 metres.
