Mid-Day Premium Is BCCI's head coach application call a mere formality or genuine opportunity?

In the ever-churning world of cricket, prophecies often precede patience.  The recent announcement by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) regarding the opening of applications for the position of Team India head coach has sparked a whirlwind of speculation and anticipation among fans and pundits alike. Even before the announcement was broadcasted, the ceaseless hum of conjecture had already begun to reverberate across social media platforms. The impending climax of Rahul Dravid's tenure as the incumbent Team India head coach, slated to conclude after the forthcoming T20 World Cup, has only fueled the fervour surrounding his successor's identity. Jay Shah, the BCCI Secretary, has unequivocally stated that Dravid will not be granted an automatic extension akin to his previous reappointment post the ODI World Cup. Interestingly, murmurs from the Indian camp have suggested a certain hesitancy towards prolonging his tenure, signalling a potential passing of the torch. Amid this backdrop of transition, the question that looms large in the collective consciousness of cricket enthusiasts is: who will assume the mantle of leadership in Indian cricket? While speculation runs rife, a few voices have dared to put forward potential answers.  Notably, fervent fans on various digital platforms, including X, have fervently touted the candidacy of former Indian cricketer VVS Laxman as the frontrunner for the coveted role of India's next head coach. The buzz surrounding Laxman's purported candidacy reached a crescendo on Tuesday, a mere day after the BCCI's call for applications resonated through all corners of Indian cricket. 🚨 News 🚨The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) invites applications for the position of Head Coach (Senior Men)Read More 🔽 #TeamIndiahttps://t.co/5GNlQwgWu0 pic.twitter.com/KY0WKXnrsK — BCCI (@BCCI) May 13, 2024 Although official disclosures regarding prospective applicants remain conspicuously absent, the odds may be in Laxman's favour, should he throw his hat into the ring. Notably, Laxman's credentials boast a rich tapestry of experience and acumen, having ably served as the stand-in head coach of Team India during Dravid's intermittent sabbaticals last year. His stewardship of the young Indian contingent, captained by Ruturaj Gaikwad, to a historic gold medal triumph at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games only underscores his adeptness at the helm. Also Read: KL Rahul vs Sanjiv Goenka row: ‘There is no harm in being respectful’ Don't worry they never applied and vvs Laxman will be head coach 😂😂 — अभि (@abhi7781_) May 15, 2024 Moreover, his current incumbency as the head of the esteemed National Cricket Academy (NCA) may serve as a potent ace up his sleeve. His intimate familiarity with the inner workings and strategic blueprint of Indian cricket, coupled with his close-knit associations with the current crop of Team India players in his capacity as the head of cricketing affairs at the NCA, renders him a promising candidate poised to seamlessly assimilate into the role of India's head coach. All these random news just to announce VVS Laxman as next head coach. Classic BCCI move 😂 https://t.co/xViHku7hQp — KS 🔰🔴 (@ks_mufc) May 15, 2024 However, several reports suggest that he may encounter stiff competition from a cadre of overseas applicants vying for the position. Shah's assertion over BCCI's willingness to appoint a foreign coach, notwithstanding the lineage of former Indian cricketers who have served as India’s coach in recent memory, underscores the cutthroat competition of the selection process. But who knows that BCCI frauds are using fake pr team for public reactions and at last they will announce vvs laxman as a head coach 😭😭😭😭😭 — lord kunal (@kunalJC183) May 14, 2024 Whether Laxman emerges triumphant amid the competitive melee or cedes the spotlight to an outsider remains a mystery. But the stage is set for the dawn of a new era in Indian cricket, guided by the steady hand of a visionary coach poised to inscribe his indelible mark on and off the 22 yards. You think Fleming or any other foreigner will get this role. BCCI will appoint VVS Laxman as the next coach eventually. Filling Google form is just a formality. — SM | Million Dollar Minds (@MlnDollarMinds) May 14, 2024

Ganguly calls Pant 'instinctive captain', assures he will 'get better with time'

Delhi Capitals' Director of Cricket Sourav Ganguly feels Rishabh Pant is an instinctive captain and his leadership skills will refine with time and experience. The dashing wicket-keeper batter returned to competitive cricket after a painstakingly long rehab following a horrific car crash in December 2022. The 26-year-old resumed his duties as the Delhi Capitals captain in IPL 2024. "Pant is a young captain, he'll learn with time. The way he returned from injury to play a full season; we had our doubts during the off season," Ganguly told JioCinema. "Indian players are crucial, especially since the TATA IPL shifted to 10 teams. I am very happy for him that he returned to play so well over a full season. He has all my well wishes for whatever is next," Ganguly added. Pant has time and again showcased his astute captaincy during the IPL, while he has also erred in his decisions a few times. "With time, he'll become a better captain. Nobody is a great captain from day one, but he is an instinctual captain, he makes decisions on the ground. With more time, he'll get better." Also Read: IPL 2024: Sixes galore! IPL's 17th edition breaks all-time sixes record DC ended their IPL 2024 league stage with seven wins and seven losses. Although they are still alive in the playoffs race as they have a mathematical chance, but in all probability they have all but played their last game this season. The likes of pacers Mukesh Kumar and Rasikh Dar Salam rose to the occasion a few times this season and Ganguly was lavish in his praise for the duo. "You've seen Rasikh's development over time. The more matches he played, the better he got. It's not easy to bowl on the Delhi wicket. This wicket is great, and the ground isn't that big, so I think for any bowler, it isn't easy to bowl here. Rasikh has improved a lot. "Mukesh has been our best bowler this season. He bowls all the difficult overs, whether at the start or at the death. There has been no match this season where we didn't need his bowling in the death," he said. "We knew that conceding sixes would lead to more losses, so he has consistently delivered there. Our Indian bowlers have been great this season."  (With agency inputs)

IPL 2024: Sixes galore! IPL's 17th edition breaks all-time sixes record

IPL 2024 has redefined the landscape of T20 cricket, witnessing a cascade of record-breaking moments. During Tuesday's clash between Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants, the ongoing season witnessed a remarkable feat: the highest number of sixes ever seen in a single edition of the lucrative league. A staggering total of 20 towering maximums were struck during the electrifying encounter between DC and LSG. Ultimately, the Capitals emerged triumphant, clinching a 19-run victory. This surge in sixes brings the cumulative count of maximums in the ongoing season to an unprecedented 1,125, eclipsing previous records. With several matches still left to be played, this number is poised to ascend even higher. Comparatively, in the preceding season, the tally stood at 1,124 sixes, while in 2022, the ball soared into the stands 1,062 times. These statistics underscore a discernible trend towards aggressive batting and the ascendancy of batsmen in the league. Moreover, this season has witnessed a plethora of records being shattered. One such instance was when the Punjab Kings successfully chased down a colossal target of 262 set by the Kolkata Knight Riders at the iconic Eden Gardens, marking the highest successful chase in the annals of T20 cricket. Also Read: Is BCCI's head coach application call a mere formality or genuine opportunity? Notably, this match also witnessed the most sixes ever hit in a T20 encounter, with a staggering tally of 42. Prior to this record-breaking feat, the Knights had notched up the highest total at Eden Gardens, posting 261/6 in the T20 format. Further adding to the record-breaking spree, the Sunrisers Hyderabad scripted history by posting the highest total of 287/3 in an IPL match against the Royal Challengers Bangalore. Earlier in the season, they had already established a new record by amassing 277/3 against the Mumbai Indians. Meanwhile, the Lucknow Super Giants, vying for a coveted playoff spot, achieved the highest successful chase at Chepauk by eclipsing a formidable 211-run target. In the same riveting encounter against the Chennai Super Kings, Marcus Stoinis etched his name in the annals of cricketing history by notching up the highest individual score in a chase, an unbeaten 124*.

Prithvi Shaw (Pic: PTI)

'If you are not in form, you can't...': Pravin Amre on Prithvi Shaw's exclusion

Delhi Capitals assistant coach Pravin Amre opened up about the exclusion of Prithvi Shaw from the playing XI for the past couple of matches after the franchise concluded their IPL 2024 group stage on Tuesday. Shaw was retained by the Capitals ahead of the season and didn't feature in the first two games. In his first game of IPL 2024, he struck a quick 43 off 27 balls against Chennai Super Kings. The right-handed batter went on to score 66(40) against the five-time champion Mumbai Indians. But his form started to waver after that. On the other hand, Abhishek Porel made the most of the opportunity and smacked 327 runs in 12 innings at a strike rate of 159.51. Also Read: Is BCCI's head coach application call a mere formality or genuine opportunity? Porel starred in DC's final game of the group stage on Tuesday at the Arun Jaitley Stadium against the Lucknow Super Giants. DC stood victorious with a 19-run win. He left the opposition bowlers gobsmacked with his knock of 58 off 33 deliveries. He aided DC in the powerplay, which saw them amass 73 runs. He also forged a 92-run stand with Shai Hope for the second wicket. "He [Shaw] was our retained player, and as you see, last four [of five] games he was also on the bench. But that's the IPL. If you are not in form, you can't [keep your place]. Ultimately, the pressure for the team is so much that every game is important and we have to win," Amre said as quoted from ESPNcricinfo. "And we had done that. Without playing him, we won the games. And whoever got the opportunity... I think Abishek grabbed the opportunities with both hands," he added. Shaw made a total of eight appearances for DC in the ongoing season. In eight matches, he has 198 runs at an average of 24.75 and a strike rate of 163.64. In his eight appearances, he has a sole fifty to his name. While Porel featured across various positions for DC. In the three matches the left-handed batter played as an opener, Porel amassed 159 runs at a strike rate of 165.62. (With agency inputs)

Royals' Yashasvi Jaiswal gets clean-bowled (Pic: AFP)

RR eye top-two finish, Rayudu feels Samson & Co. 'have fate in their own hands'

Having already sealed their ticket to IPL 2024 playoffs, Rajasthan Royals will try to better their Net Run Rate (NRR) when they clash against the ousted Punjab Kings in their penultimate league game on Wednesday. Placed second in the 10-team table with 16 points, Royals need to ensure one win in their next two 'home' games by a huge margin. That will be enough to seal the second spot. For the past few years, Guwahati has been Royals' second home base and it was a strategic move by the franchise having invested a good six years in tapping Parag's potential. Panned for being inconsistent on social media platforms, youngster Riyan Parag's homecoming this year is special as his performance of 483 runs at a strike-rate of 153 despite not being an opener is simply outstanding. A stable core and improvisation as per match situations have already made Parag an India contender for the next T20 series where he is expected to make his international debut. As and when it happens, Parag will become the first cricketer hailing from the north-eastern part of the country to wear the senior team's iconic blue jersey. His emergence as the cricketing face from the region makes this and the RR's next match against KKR more significant. Also Read: Shane shines for Challenge SC Skipper Sanju Samson, meanwhile, has grown in stature as a leader in what is expected to be his best season as a batter. He already is his team's top-scorer with 486 runs in IPL 2024. The dynamic opening duo of Yashasvi Jaiswal (344 runs) and Jos Buttler (359 runs) have had an average season by their standards but Parag and Samson have ensured that batting remained solid and consistent with he low-scoring game against CSK being an aberration. RR's strongest aspect is their bowling unit that has never been taken to the task as such during the whole season. Sandeep Sharma (Economy Rate 8.07) at the death and Trent Boult (ER 8.38) at the start have executed plans to the 'T'. Ravichandran Ashwin has only become sharper as the tournament has progressed and Yuzvendra Chahal can always produce that magic ball against the run of play. Speaking exclusively to Star Sports Cricket Live, former India cricketer Ambati Rayudu shared his thoughts on Rajasthan Royal’s chances of making it to the second spot, “Of course, they would love to win the next game they are playing and ideally should be winning it because the final game they play is against KKR. I don't think KKR will give them anything easy, because they will be scared about RR coming into the playoffs, especially in the top 2, given the form RR have shown in the tournament. So, I feel they have their fate in their own hands and I think they are going to pull through and qualify in the top 2 at the expense of CSK.” (With agency inputs)

IPL 2024: KL Rahul pinpoints what went wrong for LSG in IPL 2024

Following the drubbing against Delhi Capitals in the IPL 2024 on Tuesday, Lucknow Super Giants skipper KL Rahul said that losing a lot of wickets in the powerplay was the "big reason why we are in this position" in the ongoing 17th edition of the cash-rich league. A fine bowling spell by Ishant Sharma and an incredible death overs display by Delhi Capitals (DC) bowlers neutralised a brilliant fightback by Nicholas Pooran and Arshad Khan, leading the Capitals to a 19-run win over Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at Arun Jaitley Stadium on Tuesday. DC has jumped to the fifth spot, ending the season with seven wins, seven losses and 14 points while LSG dropped to seventh with six wins, seven losses and 12 points. The IPL 2024 playoff chances of both teams are dependent on the remaining fixtures of other franchises. The right-hand batter asserted that the wicket remained the same throughout the 40 overs. "I feel the wicket remained the same throughout the 40 overs. When we got JFM out in the first over we should have capitalized, but they - Hope and Porel - showed a lot of intent. We did well at the back end and 200 was a par total, we should have chased it down. This has been a problem right through the season - we keep losing a lot of wickets in the powerplay, we never get a solid start to get the likes of Stoinis and Pooran in, that is the big reason why we are in this position," Rahul said in the post-match presentation. Also Read: Ranji Trophy-winning Mumbai support staff retained for 2024-25 season Coming to the match, put to bat first by LSG, Delhi Capitals reached a total of 208/4 in their 20 overs, with fine fifties coming from Stubbs (57* in 25 balls, with three fours and four sixes) and Abhishek Porel (58* in 33 balls, with five fours and four sixes). Naveen-ul-Haq (2/51) was the top bowler for LSG. In the run-chase, LSG was reduced to 44/4. However, half-centuries from Nicholas Pooran (61 in 27 balls, with six fours and four sixes) and Arshad Khan (58* in 33 balls, with three fours and five sixes) kept LSG alive till the end. However, the fine death overs display from DC reduced LSG to 189/9 in their 20 overs. Ishant Sharma (3/34) was the pick of the bowlers for DC. (With agency inputs)

IPL 2024: Rishabh Pant blames suspension for hurting Delhi Capitals' playoff bid

Skipper Rishabh Pant reckons his one-match suspension probably cost Delhi Capitals a spot in the IPL 2024 playoffs as they would have had a better chance of winning the crucial game if he was on the field. Pant had to sit out the must-win clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Sunday after he was handed a one-match suspension for a third slow-over rate offence. Not only did DC lose the game but the 47-run defeat also impacted their net run rate and now they have to sit and wait for the other teams to play out their matches to find out if they have qualified for the IPL 2024 playoffs or not. "I wouldn't say we would have definitely won the game if I had played. But we had a better chance of qualifying if I would have had a chance to play in the last game," Pant said after DC's 19-run win over Lucknow Super Giants. DC endured an inconsistent run in the beginning of the season but made a late charge towards the end of the season to strengthen their chances of making it to the knockouts. Injuries to veteran pacers Ishant Sharma, Khaleel Ahmed, Mukesh Kumar and opener David Warner didn't help their cause either. "We started the season with a lot of hope, but there were injuries, and ups and downs. But as a franchise, you can't complain all the time; you have to make use of what you have... There are some things which you can control, but some things which you can't." Losing skipper KL Rahul said that loss of wickets in the powerplay throughout the season has prevented LSG from utilising big-hitters like Marcus Stoinis and Nicholas Pooran. "This has been a problem right through the season - we keep losing a lot of wickets in the powerplay, we never get a solid start to get the likes of Stoinis and Pooran in, that is the big reason why we are in this position." he said. Porel-Stubbs fifties, Ishant’s 3-34 help DC beat LSG by 19 runs

Sublime half-centuries from Abishek Porel and Tristan Stubbs, along with veteran pacer Ishant Sharma’s 3-34 helped Delhi Capitals survive a late scare from Arshad Khan to beat Lucknow Super Giants by 19 runs in Match 64 of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium here on Tuesday. After sublime half-centuries from Porel and Stubbs propelled DC to reach a massive 208/4, Ishant starred to reduce LSG to 44/4 in the fifth over. After Nicholas Pooran made a hard-hitting 61, Arshad threatened to take the game away with an unbeaten 58. But it wasn’t enough as LSG ended up at 189/9, as DC, now in fifth place, ended their group stage with a win and awaited results of other games to know if they can enter the playoffs. The result also means Rajasthan Royals have qualified for the playoffs. On a high-scoring pitch with short boundaries, Porel impressed yet again with a 33-ball 58, laced with five fours and four sixes, while sharing a 92-run stand with Shai Hope. After taking his time, Stubbs produced a stunning late onslaught to be unbeaten on 57 off 25 balls, hitting three fours and four sixes to lift DC past 200, as the hosts amassed 72 runs off the last five overs. Pushed into batting first, DC were dealt a huge blow on the second ball when Jake Fraser-McGurk mistimed a loft to be caught at long-on off Arshad for a two-ball duck. Porel continued to impress by upper-cutting Mohsin Khan for six, followed by hitting three fours and a six in Arshad's second over yielding 21 runs. Hope opened up by hitting Yudhvir Singh for two fours and a six in a 16-run fourth over, as DC reached its fifty. Porel took the attack to leg-stump deliveries from Naveen-ul-Haq by pulling and swinging hard to hit two sixes and a four as DC ended the power-play at 73/1. Porel greeted Krunal Pandya with a superb late cut going for four, before reaching his fifty in 21 balls. But spinners Krunal, Deepak Hooda and Ravi Bishnoi created pressure, which resulted in Hope slapping straight to cover, who took the catch on rebound off the leg-spinner, as the batter fell for 27-ball 38. Three overs later, Porel couldn’t get enough elevation on a slower ball off Naveen-ul-Haq and holed out to deep mid-wicket. Despite falling on the crease while trying to pull once, Pant was able to keep a stable base on his pulls off Bishnoi and Hooda for boundaries. When Krunal gave him width, Pant was quick to pull wide of mid-wicket and cut past the backward point to collect consecutive boundaries. Stubbs got going when he lofted Arshad for six and four respectively, before bringing out a reverse ramp to send the ball between the keeper and slip for four more in an 18-run 16th over. Naveen got LSG back when Pant failed to get the timing on a one-handed loft against a wide slower ball and holed out to long-on. Stubbs lofted Mohsin for six, before pulling and lofting Naveen for four and six respectively and got his fifty in 22 balls by lofting the pacer for another maximum. DC had luck on his side when Bishnoi dropped two tough catches of Stubbs and Axar in the final over, as the hosts went past 200. In defence of 208, Impact Player Ishant scythed through the LSG top-order in the power-play. K.L. Rahul was undone by lack of timing in lofting an Ishant out-swinger and gave a catch to cover-point. Quinton de Kock was next to fall to Ishant – mistiming a loft to mid-on. Marcus Stoinis danced down the pitch on Axar Patel’s first ball to loft but missed the delivery which turned enough and was stumped easily. Pooran injected some momentum into LSG’s innings by hitting Axar for two fours and as many sixes over the shorter boundary area. Though Pooran hit two more sixes and a four, including a reverse-sweep off Kuldeep Yadav, he wasn’t getting support from the other end as Ishant trapped Hooda lbw, while Ayush Badoni toe-ended a loft to long-off against Stubbs. Pooran continued to wage a lone battle by clipping Gulbadin Naib for consecutive boundaries and reached his fifty in 20 balls. But his counter-attacking knock ended in the 12th over when Axar dived forward to take a superb catch at cover off Mukesh Kumar. Once Krunal was stumped off Kuldeep, it felt that DC would coast home to victory. But Arshad had other ideas, striking Kuldeep for a four and six each, before giving the same treatment to Ishant. Arshad used the long handle well to put DC under more pressure by hitting Khaleel for two sixes and a four. Yudhvir Singh also gave him support by taking a four and six off Rasikh Salam, before holing out to long-off against Khaleel. Arshad then muscled Rasikh down the ground for six, before getting his fifty in 25 balls, to keep LSG in the hunt by bringing the equation to 29 runs off 12 balls. Ravi Bishnoi was run out by a throw from Jake Fraser-McGurk in the deep as Mukesh gave only six runs in the 19th over. Rasikh nailed his fuller and slower balls to defend 23 runs in the final over to give DC a narrow win. Brief scores:Delhi Capitals 208/4 in 20 overs (Abishek Porel 58, Tristan Stubbs 57 not out; Naveen-ul-Haq 2-51, Ravi Bishnoi 1-26) beat Lucknow Super Giants 189/9 in 20 overs (Nicholas Pooran 61, Arshad Khan 58 not out; Ishant Sharma 3-34, Tristan Stubbs 1-4) by 19 runs This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies.
