Don't think coaches have that big a role to play, says Gavaskar

Even as the South African team is still rattled by the resignation of Mickey Arthur, former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar said that the coach calling it quits wouldn't make a big difference to the team.


"I don't think coaches have that big a role to play," said Gavaskaru00a0 who arrived at the Shiv Chhatrapati International Airport from Bangladesh this morning. He was accompanied by Sachin Tendulkar, Yuvraj Singh and Zaheer Khan, returning after India's two-Test series whitewash.u00a0

"The Indian team has performed well in the last Test. It'll be a good contest," Gavaskar said referring to the coming series between India and South Africa.

Arthur, who was the Proteas' coach since 2005, resigned on Monday after the team's unimpressive performance against England at home.

Gavaskar was all praises for Khan and Tendulkar's performances in the Bangladesh series. He, however, hedged questions about tension between skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his deputy Virender Sehwag over Pragyan Ojha's selection ahead of Amit Mishra for the second Test. "It's the first time I've heard of it. There wasn't anything of the sort and I was with the team in Bangladesh."
