Team India set several records on its way to thrashing New Zealand by 321 runs at Indore's Holkar Stadium on Tuesday and sealing the three-match Test series 3-0. Some of the numbers set by the world's No. 1 Test side during the Test series, especially by it's premier off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and skipper Virat Kohli, are so impressive that even supporters of the Pakistan cricket, who lost the ICC Test Championship mace to their neighbours, would be left awe-struck.
RECORDS AND IMPRESSIVE STATS OF RAVICHANDRAN ASHWIN
Ashwin's splendid second innings figures of 7 for 59 vs the Kiwis at Indore are his best in a Test innings, beating the 7 for 66 vs South Africa at Nagpur in November 2015.
Ashwin's Test figures of 13 for 140 at the Holkar Stadium on Tuesday that ensured India thrashed New Zealand by 321 runs are his best in a Test match, outstripping the 12 for 85 vs New Zealand at Hyderabad in August 2012. His two best match performances are the best ever by a bowler for India vs New Zealand in Tests.
Ashwin's marvellous tally of six ten-wicket hauls in a Test match is bettered only by Anil Kumble (8).
Ashwin's tally of 27 wickets (ave.17.77) is the second highest by any bowler in a three-Test series vs New Zealand, next only to Waqar Younis -- 29 (ave.10.86) in 1990-91.
Ashwin, with 44 wickets at an average of 19.86 in seven Tests, including five five-wicket hauls and two instances of ten wickets or more in a Test match, is the top wicket-taker this year in Tests.
Ashwin enjoys an outstanding record in Test wins -- his tally being 151 wickets (ave.18.12) in 21 Tests, including 17 five-wicket hauls and five instances of ten wickets or more in a Test match.
Ashwin's tally of 151 wickets in wins is the third highest for India in Tests next only to the 288 by Anil Kumble and 221 by Harbhajan Singh.
Both Kumble and Ashwin share a record for most instances (five) of ten wickets or more in a Test match in a winning cause.
In only five Tests vs New Zealand, Ashwin has taken 45 wickets at 15.91 runs apiece, including six five-wicket hauls and three instances of ten wickets or more in a Test match. His tally of six five-wicket hauls and three instances of ten wickets or more in a Test match are records in Tests involving India and New Zealand.
Harbhajan Singh (vs Australia, 2000-01) and Ravichandran Ashwin (vs New Zealand (2016-17) are the only two Indian bowlers to produce two instances of ten wickets or more in a Test series.
Ashwin received his seventh Man of the Match award in Tests - his second against New Zealand.
Ashwin got the Player of the Series for the seventh time in Tests, extending his Indian record. Since his Test debut in November 2011, no other player has received so many Player of the series awards.
During the day three of the third Test between India and New Zealand, at Indore, Ravichandran Ashwin became the fourth Indian bowler to bag 20 or more instances of five-wicket hauls in Tests, joining Anil Kumble (35), Harbhajan Singh (25) and Kapil Dev (23).
Ashwin has taken his wickets' tally to 220 at an average of 24.29 -- the highest by a bowler after 39 Tests, surpassing Waqar Younis' tally of 208 (ave.20.56). Clarrie Grimmett had claimed 216 wickets (ave.24.21) in 37 Tests in his career. Just two bowlers had recorded 20 instances of five-wicket hauls in fewer Tests – England's Sydney Barnes in 25 Tests and Australia's Clarrie Grimmett in 37 Tests.
Ashwin's tally of 20 five-wicket hauls in Tests include five vs New Zealand, four each vs West Indies, South Africa and Australia, two vs Sri Lanka and one vs Bangladesh.
Ashwin also became the first Indian bowler to produce five five-wicket hauls vs New Zealand in only five Tests. Only four bowlers have registered six instances of five-wicket hauls vs New Zealand -- Derek Underwood, Ian Botham, Wasim Akram and Dale Steyn.
Ashwin has won the Man-of-the-Series award in four consecutive Test series, thus becoming only the third cricketer to ever achieve this. The other two are Pakistani all-rounder Imran Khan and West Indies' legendary pacer Malcolm Marshall. Ashwin's streak began in Sri Lanka last year.
Ashwin has four 12-wicket hauls in his kitty, the joint second-most by any bowler. Only Sri Lankan legend Muttiah Muralitharan has taken more such hauls (6) while Sydney Barnes, Fazal Mahmood and Rangana Herath have four such hauls. Anil Kumble (3) has the most among Indian bowlers.
Ashwin's distinction of taking 200 wickets in 37 Tests is the second fastest by a bowler in Tests next only to Australia's Clarrie Grimmett (37).
