Rohit Sharma has scored a total of 15 runs, Dinesh Karthik 33, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja 20 and recent Test success, Suresh Raina has 35 runs to show for from the three games each of them have played in the ongoing one-day tri-series in this nondescript Sri Lankan town.
Naturally, the poor performance of India's batsmen has caused the alarm bells to ring in Indian cricket, especially with the World Cup being less than an year away.
"It is a bit disappointing. The youngsters haven't performed up to the expectations. Only Raina has been able to establish himself in the Test side. However, the same cannot be said about others in the team," said former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar.u00a0
A strong opinion is building against the likes of Karthik, Sharma and Jadeja. They have been given a long rope and yet haven't been able to cement their places.
"If the selectors are convinced they have seen enough of the current players, then they should start looking for players who can take their places," said Vengsarkar.
India is running out of time in its World Cup preparation, but the former India chief selector said there is no need to panic. Vengsarkar observed: "The World Cup is in February and there is enough time to try out some new faces. We have enough ODIs scheduled for preparation.
"There are some good players in the A team and the selectors have to spot them and check them out."
