ItтАЩs humiliating to be denied an IPL 2026 pass: Yajurvindra Singh

Two of the most high profile teams in the IPL were playing at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday evening. I was looking forward to watching the riveting action. But I was denied the IPL pass despite being a former Test player. It is quite humiliating to be told that my name is not on the roster of the Mumbai Cricket Association. Having played a Test match for India at the Wankhede in 1977, played cricket in Mumbai as a registered MCA cricketer from 1973, being in the Managing Committee in 1989 and 1990 apart from being a Chief Guest at many MCA tournaments/ functions, one has to still endure such humiliation. It also shows how much a former, old cricketer is valued in today’s world. It was in 1976 when I went to Mr SK Wankhede, asking for a pass for the India versus New Zealand Test match (my neighbour Ravi Shastri referred to the Test the other day during his acceptance speech for the stand honour).  I told Mr Wankhede then that I will be playing the next Test (vs England in the same 1976-77 season) at his stadium, so I will not bother him thereafter. Mr Wankhede himself relayed the story in a function before the 1977 Test against England at a function. A little less than 50 years later, a full circle has emerged. The Test player pass story has haunted me for the last four to five years; often ending up being given one in the stands as a goodwill gesture. I guess one has to accept that the past is irrelevant — “What do they know of cricket, that only cricket know?” One wonders if the people at MCA know who penned this and I don’t expect them to know about CLR James. This piece is not to seek sympathy, it is to highlight the reality that many former cricketers face. The writer is the first Test player (in 1977) to take five catches in an innings after Australia’s Vic Richardson did so in 1936.

IPL 2026: Phil Salt's stellar 78-run knock helps RCB secure win over MI

Phil Salt was at his attacking best at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday night, taking the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) way past the 200-mark (240-4) against Mumbai Indians (MI). Put in to bat, Salt (36-ball 78, 6x4, 6x6) was fearless. He took only 10 singles and four doubles during his knock, while as many as 60 runs came through fours and sixes. The Englishman’s inside-out four through covers off pacer Trent Boult in the first over, was the outcome of some fine footwork and accurate placement between covers and mid-off. He then executed a Rohit Sharma-like pull shot to smash Boult for a six over square leg. Salt’s second, third and fourth sixes of the innings came in three successive balls when he hammered left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner on the leg side, taking 22 runs off the over. Salt’s half-century came in a mere 25 balls, through a cracking four off spinner Mayank Markande, between long-on and deep mid-wicket. Salt and opening partner Virat Kohli’s partnership was worth 71 after just six overs. Shardul Thakur eventually broke the 120-run opening stand, dismissing Salt through MI captain Hardik Pandya at covers. Besides Salt, Kohli (38-ball 50, 5x4, 1x6) and skipper Rajat Patidar (20-ball 53, 4x4, 5x6) also helped themselves to half-centuries.  Kohli, who was beaten on the very first ball he faced while trying to flick Boult, showcased some exemplary wrist work and footwork to hit the pacer for a couple of boundaries. Kohli reached his second 50 of this IPL in 37 balls.  Earlier, players from both MI and RCB teams wore black armbands and observed a minute’s silence to pay tribute to legendary singer Asha Bhosle, who passed away on Sunday.

'I think that was a pure team effort...': RCB skipper Rajat Patidar

In the IPL 2026 match against Mumbai Indians (MI), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) emerged victorious by 18 runs at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. After securing a dominating win, RCB's skipper Rajat Patidar said, "I think, you know, whenever we come here in Mumbai, especially at this ground, the atmosphere, the fans, and playing along with them and playing in a full-packed stadium - that's a different feeling. It was, I would say it's a more clarity about every individual, I would say (on the strong batting). And the way Virat Bhai and Salt started the innings, I think that kept us in the driving seat. Then a good cameo by me and Tim (David), I think that was a pure team effort. To be honest, people used to say that I love playing spin, but if someone asks me, I would say I love playing pace. And playing pace on this track, I think it's a very good track to play a fast bowler. So I think I love (facing) fast bowling. I don't know yet, but I think he, I feel that he's okay right now (on Virat Kohli)". On the other hand, MI's captain Hardik Pandya said, "Yes (lost too many wickets) and at the same point of time, I think we conceded way too many (runs) as well. I think that was always going to be catch-up. I think in the last couple of games, as a bowling unit or even as a batting unit, we’ve been catching up in the game rather than leading the game. We really need to reflect, really need to see what best we can do and how we can get that momentum and that click which we require. We have a couple of days off from here and we’ll play again. To be very honest, now a lot of things need to be rethought. Definitely, it’s not working. A couple of games we have won the toss, but maybe we need to see what other options we have as a batting group or bowling group. Looking at the kind of wicket it’s playing, if we can bat well, that would be good. We still need to play good cricket, we need to bat well, we need to bowl well. If we do that, then irrespective of the toss, we’ll be fine. That’s what we are planning and talking about, how do we get some momentum in the powerplay. Because if you see, in both batting and bowling, we are kind of trying to catch up in the powerplay. As you said, a lot of options will be asked and explored. We’ll see what we can do in the next game. When we got him (Rutherford), it was always exciting for us. We always knew the kind of potential and the kind of power he has. The way he batted gives us extra cushion and at the same time confidence that if we want to make some changes or see what the team requires, we can definitely do that because of the way he’s batting". IPL 2026, Mumbai Indians vs Royal Challengers Bengaluru: Second innings' summary In an attempt to chase a target of 241 runs, the "Paltan" managed to score 222 runs for the loss of five wickets in 20 overs. GT skipper Gill expresses happiness after securing dominating win over LSG

In the IPL 2026 match against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), Gujarat Titans (GT) emerged victorious by seven wickets at the Ekana Cricket Stadium B Ground in Lucknow. After securing a dominating victory in the match, GT's skipper Shubman Gill said that the Titans' bowling display in the power play was impressive. "The way we bowled in the powerplay was very impressive and how we kept up the pressure in the middle overs was tremendous. [On Rashid Khan] Makes my life very easy, the way Rashid is bowling at the moment. Getting us back in the game every time another bowler is under pressure," he said. He also heaped praise on other bowlers, who played a crucial role in the first essay of the match. "That got us back in the game, the way Siraj bowled. And even KG (Kagiso Rabada), he went for runs but he was spot on with the lengths," said Gill. "Back-to-back fifties for me and Jos, so very happy to be in form," he added. IPL 2026: LSG skipper Rishabh Pant expresses his views following the loss against GT On the other hand, Luckow's captain, Rishabh Pant, stated his team didn't score enough runs. "See, definitely not enough runs. There's nothing. From the fact that they bowled well. I think in a wicket like this, a score like 170 to 180 is a really good score. But, you know, the wicket kept on falling, and they put enough pressure on us to get those wickets going. There were opportunities in the game. We just couldn't grab it enough," he said. He also said that the management is not pressurising the players. Despite defeat, the skipper also added that there is trust and belief in the team. "See, definitely it's a great lineup. But the tournament has just started here, you know. We're not putting pressure on players because, especially the senior guys, they know what to do. Yeah, there are times when you perform and you just can't. But at the same time, you know, the trust and belief in the camp is enough. And we know he's going to come soon enough. It's always positive," Pant concluded. (With ANI Inputs)

It’s always good to bat second here. I think it’s a big game. Just want to come out and play our best cricket, do the things we’ve spoken about in the meetings, and just enjoy the sport. We requested good wickets and we’ve been getting them. As long as you land the ball right as a bowler and play the right shots as a batter, you’re in the game. Over the years at Wankhede, chasing has worked for a lot of teams. Being our home ground, dew comes in later as well. So it’s good to know what you’re chasing, you can plan your innings accordingly. Mayank Markande and Mitchell Santner come in for Chahar and Ghazanfar". On the other hand, Josh Hazlewood made way for Jacob Duffy in the Royal Challengers' team. RCB's captain Rajat Patidar said, "Obviously would have bowled first. But as you all know, it’s a good batting track. The ball comes nicely onto the bat with good bounce. So honestly, it won’t make too much difference. We’ll try to put a good total on the board and keep them under pressure. This is our fourth game. The way we’ve played the last few matches, there are a lot of positives. In the last match, we were 97 for 6 and still managed to score over 200. That’s a positive sign for us. We enjoy it a lot here. Whenever we come, we see great crowds. It’s challenging, but at the same time, fun and exciting. Just one change, Duffy comes in place of Hazlewood".
