1936 (Match drawn)
The first time India played at Old Trafford was in 1936. The Maharajah of Vizianagram-led side posted 203 in the first innings. England, in reply, piled on a mammoth 571-8 declared. India scored 390-5 in the second essay and the match ended in a draw.

1946 (Match drawn)
Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi’s Indian side managed to secure a thrilling draw after a hard-fought, rain-affected contest. India were bowled out for 170 in the first innings in reply to England’s 294. The hosts declared their second innings at 153-5. Chasing a 278-run target, India were 152-9 at close of play.

1952 (England won by an innings and 207 runs)
India suffered their biggest-ever defeat at this venue. Batting first, England declared at 347-9. In reply, the Vijay Hazare-led team failed to cross the three-figure mark in both innings, getting bowled out for just 58 and 82 respectively.

1959 (England won by 171 runs)
It was the same old story for the visitors at Manchester. The Datta Gaekwad-led side managed just 208 after England posted a massive 490 in the first innings. Chasing a 548-run target, India showed some fight before being dismissed
for 376.

1971 (Match drawn)
India found themselves lucky to manage a draw after Day Five was washed out due to rain. India scored just 212 after England posted 386 in the first innings. Chasing 420, India were 65-3 on Day Four before stumps were drawn.

1974 (England won by 113 runs)
Ajit Wadekar led India for the second consecutive time at Old Trafford. However, this time India couldn’t avoid defeat like they did in 1971. England secured an 82-run lead after declaring at 328-9 in the first innings. Chasing 296 for victory on Day Five, India were bundled out for just 182.

1982 (Match drawn)
India were rather unfortunate on this visit to Manchester, with the match being affected due to bad weather and no play possible on Day 5. England, batting first, scored 425 and India, in reply, did well to reach 379-8.

1990 (Match drawn)
Mohammed Azharuddin led the visitors to a draw in a hard-fought contest that saw England and India post impressive first-innings scores of 519 and 432, respectively. Chasing 408, India reached 343-6, thanks to a maiden Test hundred (119 not out) by a young Sachin Tendulkar.

2014 (England won by an innings and 54 runs)
India returned to Old Trafford after 24 years, but failed to win yet again. The MS Dhoni-led Indian side managed just 152 and 161 in their two innings and ended up suffering a massive defeat.
