In the second ODI match against South Africa, Team India's Ruturaj Gaikwad smashed his first century in the format at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Raipur.

The right-hander took just 77 balls to reach the celebrated three figures.

Reflecting on his stunning performance, Gaikwad said that he missed out on delivering a big knock for the side in the previous match, but also expressed happiness for his maiden ton in the format. The right-hander also said that he was focused on rotating the strike as the wicket was two-paced.

"Last game I was really gutted to miss out on a knock. It was a really good wicket and the conditions were suited for me, could have easily scored a few runs. So really gutted last game and thankfully it came out really well today," he said.

"Today it was more suitable for me, I went out to bat around the 11th over, and I told myself to approach it as if I was already 25 or 30 balls in after powerplay and bat accordingly, look to rotate strike. Until 15-20 overs it was slightly two-paced but after that it got better and we worked on that," added the right-handed batsman.

Facing 83 deliveries, the 28-year-old batsman scored 105 runs, which were laced with 12 boundaries and two maximums.

During the match, the Pune-born cricketer also stitched a crucial partnership with stalwart Virat Kohli. The duo stitched in 195 runs against the Proteas. With this, they also scripted history by registering the highest partnership for the "Men in Blue" against South Africa in ODIs for any wicket.

Later, skipper KL Rahul garnered an unbeaten 66 runs off 43 balls. His knock included six boundaries and two maximums. The hosts posted a total of 358 runs for the loss of five wickets.

South Africa's Marco Jansen was the most successful bowler. Completing his quota of 10 overs, he conceded 63 runs and bagged two wickets. Lungi Ngidi and Nandre Burger picked up one wicket each.

Keshav Maharaj, Corbin Bosch, and Aiden Markram went wicketless in the second ODI match against Team India.
