As the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) stands at the crossroads of elections, a slew of unresolved issues threaten to overshadow its future and impact its growth. With the rumoured entry of a prominent politician for the MCA president’s post, let’s assess the association’s pending issues.
The Wankhede Stadium lease renewal, pending since 2018, has resulted in a significant revenue loss for the MCA, with potential earnings from BCCI-allotted office space hanging in the balance.
Other long-standing disputes, such as the decade-long Garware Club House issue and rent disputes with commercial premises owners below the Wankhede Stadium stands, continue to linger. The Sachin Tendulkar Gymkhana dispute with municipal authorities and the absence of an operating contract with the contractor have further complicated financial tracking.
A comprehensive report akin to a white paper on these pending matters would provide the much-needed transparency and awareness, benefiting the elected Apex council members and MCA members. The recent installation of statues at Wankhede Stadium, on land with pending lease, raises eyebrows about priorities.
As the MCA election is around the corner, the question on everyone’s mind is: Will the new leadership finally tackle these pressing issues and put MCA back on track?
