India opener Prithvi Shaw will turn out for Maharashtra in domestic cricket from the 2025-26 season, the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) confirmed on Monday. This follows weeks after Shaw sought and received a No-Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Mumbai Cricket Association in late June.

"We are delighted to welcome a player of Prithvi Shaw's calibre to the Maharashtra team. His inclusion adds tremendous strength to an already talented squad comprising experienced players like Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ankit Bawne, Rahul Tripathi, Mukesh Choudhary, and Rajneesh Gurbani,” MCA President Rohit Pawar said in a statement.

“Shaw's international and IPL experience will be invaluable, especially for mentoring younger players in the squad. I extend my heartfelt thanks to the MCA Apex Council and the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) for supporting this decision. Maharashtra Cricket Association stands firmly behind Prithvi in his new journey, and we wish him the very best for the seasons ahead,” he added.

Outlining his desire to move forward for his 'growth and development as a cricketer', Shaw, in his letter to the Mumbai board, had written, "At this juncture in my career, I have been presented with a promising opportunity to play professional cricket under another State Association, which I believe will further contribute to my growth and development as a cricketer.”

The 25-year-old has amassed 4,556 runs in 58 first-class matches at an average of 46.02. However, he endured a challenging previous season, dropped from Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy squad due to concerns over fitness and discipline. His last outing for Mumbai came in December 2024, during the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy final.

In List-A cricket, Shaw has compiled 3,399 runs in 65 matches at an impressive average of 55.72 and a strike rate of 125.74. Across 117 T20s, he has scored 2,902 runs at an average of 25.01, also maintaining a strike rate of 25.01, as reported by ANI.

Shaw will now join forces with Ruturaj Gaikwad, who leads Maharashtra. The side struggled in the last Ranji Trophy campaign, managing just two wins in seven games and failing to progress beyond the group stage. Their Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy run ended prematurely as well, finishing with a modest 3-3 record and exiting in the first round.

However, Maharashtra showed greater spark in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, topping their group with commanding performances before bowing out in the semi-final against Vidarbha.
