Madrid: Zinedine Zidane said "patience and cool heads" were the vital ingredients as his Real Madrid side edged past Athletic Bilbao 2-1 to go top of La Liga.
Birthday boy Alvaro Morata scored nine minutes after coming on as a 74th-minute substitute to secure the points for Los Blancos, who had plenty of chances but also looked vulnerable at the back.
Karim Benzema gave them a seventh-minute lead but Athletic were good value for their 27th-minute equaliser from Sabin Merino.
Zidane said: "The players kept going until the end. Today, with patience and cool heads, we got the three points. We're very happy to be leaders, but above all I'm happy with how we played.
"It was a complete performance. We suffered a bit, but that is normal in football. There are no easy games, and we will suffer until the end."
