American swimmer dies

American swimmer Fran Crippen died during Saturday's 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup race in Fujairah, world governing body FINA have announced.

FINA said Crippen, who was 26, died on the last leg of the race in the United Arab Emirates. He was a bronze medallist in the 10-kilometre event at the FINA World Championships in Rome last year and again at this year's World Open Water Championships in Roberval.

FINA said in their statement: "While the causes of this death remain under investigation, FINA and the entire aquatic community address, in this moment of grief."
