Campion make U-16 title race interesting

The one-way race for the Mumbai Schools Sports Association's boys under-16 inter-school football title took a dramatic turn when the reigning champions and leaders Don Bosco (Matunga) were held to a draw by bottom-placed Campion (Cooperage) in the Super League at Azad Maidan yesterday.

The goalless outcome has given way to a potential final tomorrow between Bosco and second placed St Francis D'Assisi (Borivali).

But there is a twist to it as well. Bombay Scottish (Mahim) share the second spot with D'Assisi and are also in with a shout.

For Bosco, the equation is fairly simple: Win the game and defend the title. But if they draw again, Scottish could well run away with the title if they can beat Stanislaus when the two meet after the Bosco-D'Assisi match.

Bosco coach, Leslie Machado acknowledged that his side has made things difficult for themselves. "The result was disappointing. Had we won this game, things would have been much easier for us. Now, we can defend our title only by winning our final match," said Machado.

Interestingly, this was the second time in the under-16 section that Campion held Bosco to a goalless draw. Both teams could not find the net when they met in a league game. As a result, Scottish topped the group and Bosco came second.
