Portugal suffered a blow to their morale ahead of next month's World Cup finals in South Africa after they were held to a 0-0 draw by minnows Cape Verde, ranked 117th in the world, in a friendly last night.

The 2006 World Cup semi-finalists' star player Cristiano Ronaldo was a peripheral figure for the first hour of the match leaving the creative play to Nani and Fabio Coentrao.

But, their creativity was wasted as they missed a host of scoring opportunities. "We wanted to win here... but I'm sure we will be better come the World Cup," said Ronaldo.
