The city of Mumbai has been experiencing severe water shortage since the last two years. Steps are being taken at all levels to conserve and reduce the usage of water for different purposes. We all know that in sports, especially in cricket the consumption of water is at a higher level. Now, this is a serious concern. The BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) five years ago, even requested all the sporting organisations to avoid using drinking water for watering the ground.
Efforts are now being made and implemented by some cricket clubs in Mumbai. The Dadar Parsi Zoroastrian Cricket Club has decided to create their own source of water supply to meet at least a part of water required during the non monsoon cricket season. The club has undertaken rain water harvesting project to store the rain water and use the same during cricket season. The club will collect rain water, filter it and then connect the pipe to the borewell , which will then result in saving a lot of water.
This unique strategy has been thought out and executed by the Dadar Parsi Zoroastrian Cricket club's secretary Mangesh Bhalekar. "We thought about this project a couple of years ago. I must thank my friend Bappa Salvi, an expert in this field, who suggested this idea and has been instrumental in shaping up this plan," said Bhalekar.
Mumbai Cricket Association secretary, Lalchand Rajput told MiD DAY: "This is a terrific initiative on the part of the club, this project will ensure that a lot of water is saved. I am sure that this project will be a success and this will also provide the cricketers better facilities to play."
