The District Sports Office (DSO) boys’ U-17 final between Antonio D’Souza High School (Byculla) and KC College (Churchgate) at St Xavier’s ground, Parel was marred by an ugly brawl yesterday. The two players — Dayyan Ansari (ANZA) and Salman Damani (KC College) who were involved in the fight, were shown the red card.

The ANZA played out a rough encounter throughout and towards the end, when they were 0-3 down, their players began abusing the KC boys. Five minutes from the end, ANZA’s Dayyan elbowed Salman and the two got into a heated argument, slapping and pushing each other before falling to the ground. Even before referee Elvis Nunes could intervene, ex-ANZA players from the stands marched onto the ground and began attacking the KC College players. It literally turned into a free for all as a crowd gathered around the fighting players.

DSO official Sumit Patil

KC College coach Sushant Pawar was furious at the ANZA players’ behaviour. “We expected a rough game, but this was uncalled for. They were down 0-3 and so frustrated. Salman retaliated on being pushed, but their ex-students coming on to the field was shameful. Their coach Sajid Sabir Ansari couldn’t control the situation,” said Pawar.

Ansari meanwhile, blamed the KC College players for starting the fight. “The KC player first abused Dayyan, and pushed him, after which my players lost his cool, but our ex-students should not have entered the ground,” said Ansari. Unfortunately, DSO official Sumit Patil was not on the ground when the fight broke out. “I was in the referee’s room making arrangements for the prize distribution and came out only when I heard the noise. This is very sad,” said Patil, adding that he will not take any action against the boys as it could affect their careers.

Results (All finals): B-U-17: KC College 3 (S Shinde 2, S Damani) bt ANZA 0; B-U-14: Cathedral 4 (Kabir S, J Irani, R Shah, Agrim S) bt Don Bosco (Matunga) 2 (Shyam R, Samar K) via tie-breaker; G-U-17: Bombay Scottish (Mahim) 4 (Trisha Thakkar, Deniese Pereira, S Arora, A Nagar) bt Cathedral 2 (M Devangi, Nikita Jain)
