India goalkeeper Subrata Paul's bid to become the second Indian after Sunil Chhetri to feature in the US Major League Soccer received a major setback as his groin injury failed to heal on time.
The Pune FC custodian, who was to attend trials for the Vancouver Whitecaps, sustained the injury during Saturday's match against Mumbai FC. "The injury hasn't got any better and the doctor has advised me a five-day bed rest," he said yesterday.
Paul was scheduled to leave for Vancouver today for two weeks and had all his formalities, including visa, ready for departure.
But he will now have to reschedule his plans including cutting the trip short, owing to the injury. "Now, I will only be going for five days. If I would have gone tomorrow (Tuesday), it would have been for 10-12 days," the 23-year-old said, adding that he might even have to scrap the trip.
"There is no point going there at this moment because I cannot practice. I will go only if I am 100 per cent fit. Otherwise I won't," he said. If the trials are successful, Subrata will join the club in May. They will make their debut in the MLS next season.
