One might often get complacent when pitted against friends in a competition. Ditto was the case with IES VN Sule Guruji when faced IES Raja Shivaji in the semi-final of the Harris Shield inter-school cricket tournament at Cross Maidan yesterday.
The two Dadar schools, fighting for a spot in the final, belong to Indian Education Society and players from the two sides practice together regularly in the same nets.
The fact that both teams didn't take the game seriously, to start of with, is reflected in the scores. VN Sule Guruji were bowled out for 192 on a decent batting track and in reply, Raja Shivaji folded for merely 147.
VN Sule Guruji skipper Omprakash Jaiswal confirmed that his side was over-confident ahead of the game and that attitude almost cost them a place in the final.
He was relieved after his last two batsmen had a crucial 62-run partnership for the 10th wicket that got them to 192. "No one is to blame but ourselves.
"We were over-confident and it reflected in the middle, when we kept losing wickets on a wicket that did not have much in it," Omprakash said after getting his side back in to the match with figures of 6-42.
u00a0The pep talk by coach Gopal Koli acted as a timely booster. "We know each other too well as most of the time we practice together.
"But it was important to get away from that friendly environment, if we wanted to make it to the final," Omprakash added.
