2017-12-18Nicole Franco of St Joseph's Convent High School (Bandra) had a glorious day on Saturday as she added another gold medal to her account in the Mumbai Schools Sports Association (MSSA)-organised inter-school athletics championship. Nicole won the U-16 girls 100m race at University Sports Pavilion, Marine Lines a day after clinching gold in the 200m race with a timing of 25.6 secs, breaking the MSSA record of 26.0secs.

Not only did she bag her second gold medal on Saturday, she also broke the current MSSA record of 12.7secs in the 100m race with an impressive timing of 12.5secs. Sharvari Parulekar and Harita Bhadra, of Udayachal High School (Vikhroli) settled for silver and bronze respectively. "My parents and Ravi sir (coach Bagdi) have supported me a lot. A few years ago, I was planning to stop running to concentrate on my studies, but it was my father who encouraged me to continue with athletics. I started working even more harder," said Nicole, a national-level athlete.


"Nicole has been training with me since her U-10 days, but she started coming up with good performances at U-12 events in 2015. She is a promising talent and very hard working," said Bagdi who is also the secretary of MSSA's athletics wing.

Mohit, Shrushti win too
Mohit Ganpule of Udayachal HS (Vikhroli) won the boys U-16 100m event in 11.7secs. Meanwhile, Shrushti Shetty of Children's Academy ICSE (Malad) clinched gold in the U-14 100m race, equalling the state record of 12.6secs. Urvish Pokhariyal of Lilavatibai Podar HS (Santacruz) won gold in the 100m race for boys U-14.

Siya is U-12 champ
Siya Sawant of Lakshadham HS (Goregoan) clinched gold in the 100m race for U-12 girls. An outstanding show by Tannishta Dineshkumar of Udayachal HS (Vikhroli) saw her clinch U-16 honours in the discus throw event. Her winning distance was 30.77m while Bharat Choudhary of St Thomas HS (Dahisar) secured the gold medal in the boys U-16 javelin throw.
