The 31-year-old fourth seed took four minutes short of one and a half hours to record the win and was joined in the last eight by third seed Gael Monfils, a 6-4, 6-4 winner over qualifier Steve Darcis.
Gilles Simon rallied to edge out Argentina's eighth seed and former Wimbledon finalist David Nalbandian
3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 7-5.
However there was no joy for another Frenchman Richard Gasquet, who blew a one-set lead and dropped a tight second set tie-break before going down 4-6 7-6 (10-8) 6-2 to Finland's Jarkko Nieminen.
