US swimming legend Michael Phelps was recently gifted a liquor bottle at a gala held in his honour by Mayor Drew Dilkens in Windsor, Ontario. However, given that Phelps has dealt with alcohol issues in the past, the mayor got trolled online for his gift.

“Our Mayor gave Micheal Phelps a bottle of whiskey... buddy is a recovering alcoholic, can Drew Dilkens do anything right,” wrote one Twitter user. “Michael Phelps has been arrested twice on DUI and went to rehab, when he came to town this weekend my mayor gave him a bottle of whisky. Wtf,” wrote another. Dilkens justified his gift saying: “Phelps doesn’t classify himself as being an alcoholic. If he did classify himself as an alcoholic, I would have made a different choice.”
