After receiving a first-round bye, Monfils was quickly into his stride against the 31-year-old unseeded wild card, sending down 10 aces and saving six of seven break points on his way to posting a 6-1 6-1 win inside 67 minutes.
Next up for the world number 13 at the indoor hard-court tournament is a last-eight encounter with Serbia's Janko Tipsarevic, who defeated Monfils' conqueror in the 2005 final, Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia.
