Webber, however, was unwilling to give up his position and when Hamilton turned in, there was contact. The contact sent Hamilton into a semi-spin his left rear tire was damaged. Hamilton's race was finished.
Webber though fortunate to continue and his Red Bull unharmed by the contact went onto third place and extend his championship lead to 11 points.
"I was on the outside, I thought I was past on the braking," Hamilton said. "I began to turn in, but leave enough room on the inside, and the next thing I knew I got clipped. This is racing I guess."
Webber acknowledged it was "a key part of the race for me to keep him out."
"Lewis had a pretty good run on me but that is the only corner on the track where things like that can happen," Webber said.
"Neither of us wanted to give an inch. We didn't hit that hard but it was enough to almost put both of us out of the race."
Meanwhile, Fernando Alonso produced a masterful drive to win ahead of a charging Sebastian Vettel to put the world championship title race on a knife-edge.
Starting from pole position, the Ferrari star led from start to finish for the second race in a row to take the chequered flag in 1:57.893, just 0.2 seconds ahead of the Red Bull.
