The Spaniard, the 2007 champion in Metz, triumphed 6-1 7-6 (7/3) against his German opponent to set up a meeting with Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan, who overcame Frenchman Florent Serra 6-4 6-4 in the day's final match.
Also in first-round action today, Rainer Schuettler - at 34 the oldest player in the singles draw - was beaten 7-6 (7/5) 6-2 by fellow German Michael Berrer.
The top four seeds ufffd Croatian pair Marin Cilic and Ivan Ljubicic and Frenchmen Gael Monfils and Richard Gasquet ufffd were all handed first-round byes.
