Formula One championship leader Sebastian Vettel set a scorching pace to seize pole position ahead of teammate Kimi Raikkonen, as Ferrari locked out the front row in qualifying for today's Hungarian Grand Prix.

The German, who leads championship rival Lewis Hamilton by one point in the overall standings, sizzled on a hot afternoon in track temperatures of over 50 degrees celsius to set a lap of one minute, 16.276 seconds, the fastest ever at the Hungaroring. Raikkonen, who led Ferrari's last qualifying one-two at May's Monaco Grand Prix, was 0.168 seconds slower. Valtteri Bottas led Mercedes' charge in third.

Saturday's pole was Vettel's 48th in career and second this season. It was Ferrari's second front-row lockout of the year after Monaco and the Italian outfit's first in Hungary since 2004.

"The car today has been incredible. Obviously the last race wasn't great for us but we are here now and I'm happy where we are as a team," added the four-time champion, who saw his championship lead slashed from 20 points to just one after he finished seventh in Silverstone.
