India’s fine run at the Suhandinata Cup — the team event of the BWF World Junior Championships — ended with a bronze medal after the hosts went down 0-2 (35-45, 21-45) to defending champions Indonesia in the semi-finals here on Friday.
The Indian doubles pair of Bhargav Arigela and Viswa Gobburu began by beating Indonesia’s Muhammad Mubarrok and Raihan Pramono 9-5, but singles players Unnati Hooda and Rounak Chouhan lost their respective matches to hand Indonesia a four point lead (27-23).
The mixed doubles duo of Lalramsanga and Vishakha Toppo did raise hopes of a fightback, but the Indonesian pair of Ikhsan Pramudya and Rinjani Nastine raised their level to win 10-9.
Nastine then teamed up with Riska Anggraini to beat India’s Reshika U and Vennala K 9-2 to wrap up the set 45-35.
In the second set, Indonesia’s Mubarrok and Pramono began by beating the Indian boy’s combination 9-2. With Unnati losing 7-9 to Wiryawan and Rounak losing 7-9 to Ubaidillah, it was too big an ask for the doubles combinations to close the gap.
