The 45-year-old Venus Williams yet again registered a win on her return to the sport after a 16-month hiatus at the DC Open.
In the DC Open women's singles match, the US-born tennis star registered a win by 6-3, 6-4 against the 22-year-old Peyton Stearns.
She also became the second-oldest woman after Martina Navratilova to win a women's singles match. Navratilova won a tour-level singles match at the age of 47 years in 2004.
Venus stated that she kept adapting to a positive mindset while training for this event.
"Each week that I was training, I was, like, Oh, my God, I don't know if I'm good enough yet.' And then there would be weeks where I would leap forward. And there would be two weeks where I was, like, Oh, God, it's not happening.' Even the week leading up, (I thought), Oh, my gosh, I need to improve so much more.' So it's all a head game," said the seven-time Grand Slam singles winner.
During the match, she showed glimpses of the talent she possesses and the skills she displayed while earning all of her Grand Slam titles: seven in singles, 14 in women's doubles alongside younger sister Serena Williams. With the win in the first match, she will now lock horns against Magdalena Frech in her upcoming clash.
She also said that she keeps praying for good health to keep playing at a certain level of the sport.
"I'm just constantly praying for good health, so that way I could have an opportunity to play with good health," Williams said. "A lot of this for me is being able to come back and try to play at a level (and) to play healthy," she added.
Before this, she partnered up with American athlete, Hailey Baptiste, to come victorious in the doubles category against Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard and US teen Clervie Ngounoue. The duo registered a win by 6-3, 6-1 at the DC Open.
During Williams' doubles match, a famous sports personality made his attendance along with 3000 spectators. NBA star Kevin Durant made his appearance in the stands to witness Venus Williams' return to the sport at the age of 45 years.
"We were both so focused, and after the match, I was, like, 'Did you see Kevin Durant walk in?' She was, like, 'Yeah'," expressed Williams.
