In the past, Oscar Piastri struggled in the final races of a season while trying to secure a racing championship. The Australian driver hopes that the lessons learnt can come in handy starting at this weekend’s Mexican Grand Prix.
Piastri won seven of the first 15 Grands Prix this season to build a comfortable 104-point lead over reigning champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull. However, that gap is now down to 40 points, with the Dutchman winning three of the last four races.
“I think he’s been very strong over the last few weekends, there’s no denying that. But there’s no benefit worrying about that, the thing that’s going to help me win this championship is trying to get the most out of myself,” said Piastri on Thursday.

Something similar happened to Piastri in the 2020 season of Formula 3, where he lost a 25-point lead and then trailed Logan Sargeant by seven points, but finished strong in the last few races to win the crown. “I think it is a good thing I have evidence that I can pull it off and won both of those championships. Those are nice things to look back on. But I also know that just because I’ve done it before doesn’t mean it’s automatic to happen this time around,” said Piastri.
Piastri is also under threat from teammate Lando Norris, who trails him by just 14 points in the Drivers’s Championship standings currently.
