India’s two-time youth world champion Sakshi delivered a commanding performance to secure the country’s first gold medal at the second World Boxing Cup in Astana on Sunday. Competing in the women’s 54kg final, the 24-year-old overwhelmed USA’s Yosline Perez with her relentless attack, winning by unanimous decision.

Sakshi showcased sharp speed and fluid combination punches throughout the bout, stamping her authority from the opening round and leaving no room for doubt among the judges. Her victory ensured India’s tally continued to rise at this edition of the World Boxing Cup, with the contingent already assured of 11 medals.

In the earlier session, Meenakshi put up a spirited fight against Kazakhstan’s Nazym Kyzaibay in the women’s 48kg final but narrowly lost out in a close 3-2 split verdict, settling for silver.

India also picked up two more silver medals through Jugnoo in the men’s 85kg category and Pooja Rani in the women’s 80kg division. Jugnoo was defeated 0-5 by Kazakhstan’s Bekzad Nurdauletov, while Pooja went down by the same margin to Australia’s Eseta Flint.

The Indian boxers have carried forward strong momentum from the first leg of the World Boxing Cup held in Brazil, where they collected six medals, including one gold and one silver.

India’s medal prospects remain bright in Astana, with four more boxers set to contest for gold in the evening session. Brazil leg gold medallist Hitesh Gulia will lead the charge in the men’s 70kg, joined by Abhinash Jamwal (men’s 65kg), Jaismine (women’s 57kg), and Nupur (women’s 85+ kg).

With several finals still to come, the Indian squad is poised for one of its most successful outings on the international stage this year.
