We tested out this detective game for you – and boy, do we have thoughts
PIC/ISTOCK
Give me a true crime video series/podcast series and well you won’t see me out and about for most part of the weekend. So when we saw an online advertisement for solving a crime, we were game. The name — Detectives Den — was not very imaginative but then as we began to go through the kit and were happy to see that the grammar was actually on point, but then again that is no marker for a good game. There are two games under this franchise, one is Deadly Deception and the other is Midnight Vengeance, our brain obviously thought vengeance would be challenging.

The game is interesting but easily solvable
The games come in kits, around 40 pages each where you are introduced to a crime — in this case the death of William Harper, a financial officer who is found dead on New Years eve by his wife and you play the detective, in this case. We felt that the game was too simple, given that most of us have been ingesting true crime media for years and the game felt too theory-like in the beginning, with what your witness statements and data calls.
There are a series of interrogations that the detective, Dave Cassidy does and you get to read the excerpts of the suspects. Then there are some random puzzle boxes thrown in, with no established connection to the crime, so that threw us off a bit. But we powered through and still went ahead to solve it. Then you have clues that are given to you at certain intervals to divert your attention but you see it coming from a distance and a few again to help you to decipher who the killer might be.
We were slightly disappointed because we figured out the killer in 45 minutes while the game says that it will take two people 1.5 to 3 hours to play the game. At the same time it’s not absolutely useless and the two of us who played did find it slightly amusing than usual doom-scrolling on the weekend. So in all we would rate it a 3 out of 5, but if you’re a true crime genius maybe you can skip this one.
